Iqbal: Rejection of Secular Foundation of Democracy

Ever since the colonization of the Muslim lands and the spread of Western concepts and ideologies in the Muslim world, Muslim thinkers seemed to have preoccupied in exploring and analyzing the alien ideologies from Islamic perspective. Obviously, the purpose behind this has been to provide the correct Islamic stance to the people on several issues related to the Western concepts and ideologies. Some important ideologies that have been assessed and are still under critical assessment by Muslim thinkers include nationalism, democracy and feminism. A survey of the Muslim reflections on these ideologies needs a full-fledge study that is beyond this paper.

Here, in this paper, an attempt is made to make an exploration of the views of the world-known poet-philosopher of Islam, Mohammad Iqbal on democracy. For this a comprehensive study of his writings both in the form of prose and poetry is explored and analyzed. Besides this, some secondary sources are also referred to and utilized. It is contended in the paper, that although Iqbal accepted some of the principles of democracy but he has rejected the secular and material orientation of the philosophy of democracy. It is argued that Iqbal’s acceptance of some principles of democracy and his rejection of some aspects of democracy is based on his broad perception of Islamic fundamentals and concepts. It implies that Iqbal accepted only those principles of democracy which he deems compatible with Islam but at the same time he rejected the secular foundation of the same principles as well as all those principles and core concepts of democracy which he thinks incompatible with Islamic philosophy of life and Islamic polity. It is therefore concluded in the paper that it is as irrational to accept any of the Western concept or ideology without any critical scrutiny as it is illogical to reject any Western concept and ideology only because it is originated in the West. Hence, Iqbal’s stance on democracy seems to be a commendable model for Muslim scholars to decide about the Islamic position on any Western concept and ideology. However, it is also emphasized that it is more essential and urgent for Muslim thinkers to concentrate and promote their own Islamic terms and terminologies and to devote their intellectual potentials on setting proper directions to the destination of Islamic Ummah-revitalization of Islamic civilization. Engagement in the debates on the compatibility and incompatibility of Islam with every concept and ideology which Western modernity and postmodernism are presenting before the world should be only a side business not the main preoccupation of thinkers and leaders of the Muslim Ummah.

It is important to clarify at the very out set that the views of Iqbal on democracy cannot be studied in isolation with his broad perception of Islam, his philosophy of (Khudi) selfhood, his concepts of (mard i mu’min) man of belief or (insān i kāmil) perfect man and his views on ijmā‘ and ijtihād. Hence, Iqbal’s views on democracy shall be studied and assessed in context with the above concepts. The paper comprises three parts. In the first part, Iqbal’s arguments and contentions for the acceptance of democracy shall be presented and analyzed. Whereas, in the second part, Iqbal’s arguments for the rejection of some democratic principles shall be highlighted. This shall be followed by a conclusion.

Iqbal: Acceptance of Some Democratic Principles:

Some of the important principles of democracy that are appreciated by Iqbal include ‘freedom’, ‘equality’ and ‘election’. He finds these principles compatible with Islam to a certain extent. For instance, he points out that in Islam, although the interest of an individual is subordinated to the community but the individual is given sufficient liberty which is necessary for the development of his personality. He contends that the Western theory of democracy also protects the interest of the community while providing a conducive environment to individuals for their own development in the same way as Islam does. He writes.

The best form of government for such a community would be democracy, the idea of which is to let man develop all the possibilities of his nature by allowing him as much freedom as possible.[i]

Iqbal illustrates his contention by pointing out that the Caliph of Islam is subject to the same laws like all others in the given state. He is supposed to be elected by the people and should be deposed by the people “if he goes contrary to the law”.[ii] Hence, Iqbal asserts: “Democracy, then, is the most important aspect of Islam, regarded as a political ideal”.[iii] But at the same time, he points out that this ideal of freedom lasted in the Muslim world only for thirty years and later “disappeared with its political expansion”.[iv]

At some other place, Iqbal traced some historical facts to show how the principles of freedom, equality, election and deposition of rulers are operated in early Muslim history. Once some one asked the Prophet Mohammad whether he would get any position after the Prophet, if he embraced Islam? The Prophet said that it was not in his disposition to do it. Then, Iqbal pointed out how Abū Bakr was selected as the first Caliph and what he said to the people: “…Obey me as I obey the Lord and his Prophet, where in I disobey, obey me not.”[v] Thus Iqbal highlighted some important historical facts to show that “the idea of universal agreement is, in fact the fundamental principle of Muslim constitutional theory.”[vi] All this shows the “freedom” and equality that embodied in Islam. He also quoted the Prophet who is reported to have said: “I am a man like you; like you my forgiveness also depends on the mercy of “God”. He also discussed the classical theory of Caliphate, particularly the theory presented by al-Māwardī. Through out this discussion, he emphasized that “if the Caliph does not rule according to the law of Islam, or suffers from physical or mental infirmity, the Caliph is forfeited.”[vii] Further he writes:

The origin of state then, according to Al- Māwardī, is not force, but free consent of individual who unite to form a brotherhood, based upon legal equality, in order that each member of the brotherhood may work out the potentialities of his individuality under the law of Islam. Government, with him, is an artificial arrangement, and is divine only in the sense that the law of Islam-believed to have been revealed-demands peace and security.[viii]

Iqbal also discussed how all the officials are appointed or elected in the Caliphate and they are removed by the concerned authorities or people, as explained by al-Māwardī. After having discussed all this, he remarked: “It is clear that the fundamental principle laid down in the Qur’an is the principle of election; the details or rather the translation of this principle into a workable scheme of Government is left to be determined by other considerations.”[ix] Iqbal then pointed out that later the principle of election did not develop on democratic lines for two reasons. Firstly, the idea of election did not suit the Persians and the Mongols. Secondly, the Muslims during this period were preoccupied with political expansion.[x]

From the above views of Iqbal, many scholars including Maïharuddīn contends that “Iqbal stresses the elective principle as the basis of Islamic democracy. Besides, he believes in the supremacy of the law and the equality of all Muslims.”[xi]

In fact, according to Iqbal, it is Islam which has imported to the people their natural rights, equality, freedom and justice. He writes:

Liberty took its birth from its gracious message,

This sweet wine dripped from its grapes!

It was impatient of invidious distinctions.

Equality was implicit in its being!

The modern age, kindled a hundred lamps, has opened its eyes in its lap.[xii]

The above words of Iqbal throw abundance of light on the fact that the modern Western discourse on liberty and equality can be traced back to Islam, particularly from the time of the Prophet Mohammed and the period of Khulafā-i-Rāshidūn. It was during this period that the real meaning of liberty and equality was translated into practice. In other words, this principle of democracy-liberty and equality are not new to Islam at all. In fact, it is Islam which has presented these concepts to the world to liberate man from all sorts of man-centred authoritarianism and dominations. It clearly implies that Islam is totally against hereditary monarchies, dynasties, empires, military dictatorships and self-imposed rule over the people.[xiii] But, after the period of Khulafā-i-Rāshidūn (period of Four Rightly Guided Caliphate), the elective principle of Islamic polity was gradually relegated to background. Therefore, it is generally argued that one of the reasons of the decline of the Islamic Ummah can be traced back to the time of the Muslim history when the concept of Shūra (consultation) is set aside and instead the elements of ‘force’ or ‘heredity’ were practically incorporated in the Muslim political history.[xiv] Hence, it is important to differentiate between the real Islamic political system and the Muslim political practices after the Rightly Guided Caliphate. It seems that there is a need of making the same kind of differentiation between Western theories on liberty and equality and the Western practices, particularly, British and French colonialism. For instance, a study of at least one direct original contributor to the theory of democracy, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, shows that there is a big difference between how Rousseau defined ‘liberty’[xv] and how the British and the French colonized many countries and deprived people all kinds of freedom and liberty. It may be argued that Rousseau advocated direct democracy and presently Western states are following representative democracy and British and the French colonization have nothing to do with democracy. But it is not the question of form, direct or indirect democracy but the latent meaning of civil liberty as defined by Rousseau-obedience to the law prescribed by oneself is liberty. Was the British colonization of Indian subcontinent based on this concept of liberty? Did the British colonize India after taking the ‘general will’ of the Indians? Basically, is colonization based on the concepts of ‘liberty’ and equality? Colonization was justified by the West as ‘White man’s burden’ of civilizing the uncivilized! Does colonizing mean civilizing? If not, then, in no way can colonization be justified. But Iqbal observes the following:

Democracy has been the great mission of England in modern times, and English statesmen have boldly carried this principle to countries which have been, for centuries, growing under the most atrocious forms of despotism….England, in fact, is doing one of our own great duties, which unfavourable circumstances did not permit us to perform.[xvi]

As far as Iqbal appreciates liberty, equality and the elective principle in democracy, it is understandable. But to talk about England as though it took the mission of democracy particularly at a time when it was in full swing of its colonization net-work with its imperialistic designs is questionable. Iqbal who lived during the British colonization of India was quite aware of British imperialism and its double standard policy for ‘liberty’ and ‘equality’ towards itself and its colonized people. If democracy means to give real freedom and liberty to all the people, to let people enjoy all the human rights based on their traditions, to respect all cultures and civilization all over the world and to allow them to rise and flourish, then, it is very hard to say the true fact, that not only Britain, the whole of the West which boasts about democracy, does not follow it sincerely. Whether it is the question of human rights or the issue of exporting democracy, the West has never followed it as a mission for its own sake but only for its own self interest of promoting imperialistic agenda. This attitude of double standard of the West is admitted by the Western scholars themselves.

Huntington observes:[xvii]

Non-Westerners also do not hesitate to point to the gaps between Western principle and Western action. Hypocrisy, double standards, and “but nots” are the price of universalist pretensions. Democracy is promoted but not if it brings fundamentalists to power…

Unlike what Iqbal had said, England, neither took the mission of democracy during its period of colonization nor it the West as a whole ever took up democratization as a mission for its own sake. Nevertheless, it is no doubt the mission of the Islamic Ummah to liberate people from absolutism and despotism of a single man or a group of people, but this requires the promotion of popular ‘vicegerency’ not popular sovereignty which is the central part of secular democracy.

Iqbal’s views on the growth of the republican spirit, the abolition of Khilafah in Turkey, the importance of ijtihād and ijmā‘ are also very much relevant to comprehend his stance for democracy. According to Iqbal, the abolition of Khilafah in Turkey is based on ijtihād. He contended that the Turks exercised ijtihād to settle the first question of the Khilafah: ‘Should the Caliphate be vested in a single person?’ He pointed out that the ijtihād of the Turks that the Caliphate or Imamate can be vested in a body of persons or an elected Assembly is “perfectly sound”. He asserted: “The republican form of government is not only thoroughly consistent with the spirit of Islam, but has also become a necessity in view of the new forces that are set free in the world of Islam.”[xviii] As for ijmā‘, according to Iqbal, the modern legislative assemblies bear the characteristics of ijmā‘: He writes:[xix]

“….the transfer of power of ijtihād from individual representatives of schools to a Muslim legislative Assembly, which, in view of the growth of opposing sects, is the only possible form ijmā‘ can take in modern times.

Iqbal strongly believed in collective ‘ijtihād’. He argued that in the contemporary times, the right of ijtihād should not be concentrated only in the hands of individual scholars and experts of the Qur’an and Sunnah alone. Along with the experts of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, it seemed essential to seek the opinions of experts in physical and social sciences on the given issue as the case may be. Hence according to Iqbal, legislative assemblies constituted by experts of various disciplines including the experts of the Qur’an and the Sunnah and Uṣūl al Fiqh can play an important role in exercising collective ijtihad.[xx]

However, later Iqbal realized some practical problems that might arise in the legislative assemblies where Muslims are in minority like British India. He proposed the formation of an assembly of Ulema who should be independent of the legislature. “The idea” of the assembly, according to Iqbal, “is to protect, expand, and, if necessary, to reinterpret the law of Islam in the light of modern conditions, while keeping close to the spirit embodied in its fundamental principles.”[xxi] For this reason, many scholars including Mūḥammad Khālid Mas‘ūd contend that “the significance of Iqbal’s contribution in this discussion thus lies in his re-construction of ijtihād as a collective effort in the form if ijmā‘, rather than an individual attempt.”[xxii]

Here, Iqbal’s contention that the abolition of Khilafah in Turkey and its replacement with the republican form of government is based on ijtihād, needs critical assessment. There is no doubt that the Khilafah in Turkey remained only in namesake since the whole institution of Khilafah was distorted and degenerated. It can also not be disputed that Islamic political system is based on consent and elective principle. But was it not clear to Iqbal that Mustafa Kamal Ataturk was not interested in restoring Islamic political system, rather he aimed and established a thoroughly secular republic based on the Western model? If Kamal Ataturk had abolished the distorted and torn out Caliphate in 1924 in order to establish the genuine Caliphate based on Shūra with the supremacy of Sharī‘ah, this would have been welcomed by the Muslim world whole heartedly. But, history bears witness to the fact that all the attempts of Ataturk were manoeuvred on Western model of modernization. But, it does not however mean that Iqbal accepted secularism and secular foundation of democracy which shall be soon discussed later in the paper. Perhaps to Iqbal, the abolition of the distorted caliphate and the formation of a republican government is Ijitihād, not of course the formation of Western styled secular republic which is repugnant to Islam.

However, an important point can be raised here as a corollary of this discussion on shūra, ‘ijtihād, and ijma‘ and Iqbal’s assertion on the consultative and elective principles of democracy that they are based on the Qur’anic demand “rule by mutual consultation”, (amruhum Shūra bainahum)[xxiii] Even the Prophet was commanded to take counsel with the companions in all public matters. Here, the question arises as to who should be consulted by whom? It should be remembered that when the Prophet was asked by the companions about the decision that is mentioned in the Qur’anic verse (3:159) he replied that it means “taking the counsel of those who are known for their good opinions and then following it.”[xxiv] It is also reported by Abū Huraira that “the Prophet practiced Shūra with his companions more frequently than anyone else he had seen”.[xxv] The same tradition of consultation (Shūra) was followed by all the first four Rightly Guided Caliphs. According to Ibn Taimiyyah (Shūra) consultation is obligatory for Muslim authorities (ulu ’l-amr) where no explicit injunction from the Qur’anic revelation is available.[xxvi]

According to the historical practice, it is important to note that not only the Caliphs ruled with consultation but even they were appointed on the basis of the consultative method. According to the jurists including Ibn Taimiyyah and al-Bāqilānī, the Imam can only be appointed through the choice of the people, (al-ikhtiyār) which implies that “the Imam holds his office because of a contract drawn by the wise (ahl al-ḥall wa al-‘aqd).[xxvii] It is agreed by all the scholars including Fathi Osman who asserted that “after the death of the Prophet (11 A. H. /632 C.E) the first four caliphs held their offices as a result of free election.”[xxviii] This public agreement which offered the caliph his power is known as bai‘ah (from the root bai‘ah, meaning “to sell”). The Qur’anic principle of Shūra (counsel) inspired this unique historical experiment.”[xxix] According to the historical facts, this bai‘ah was given firstly by the pious distinguished and leading persons of the community. This bai‘ah was followed by the bai‘ah of the masses which the caliph obtained in the mosque. According to some historians the bai‘ah given by the distinguished and the leading persons is a “special bai‘ah.” Whereas, these distinguished and leading persons who give their special bai‘ah, are known in the juristic literature as (ahl al-ḥall wa al-‘aqd).[xxx] Later, by the time of the Ummayyad dynasty itself, the term and the procedure of “ahl al-ḥall wa al-‘aqd” survived only in the juristic literature because the elective principle was gradually ignored and eliminated.

As far as the consultation of (ulu ’l-amr) on public matters is concerned, there are different opinions among scholars on this issue. However, as pointed out by Fathi Osman, “most commentators of the Qur’an as well as jurists take the term “ulu ’l-amr” to mean both the rulers and ulema together, while some of them say that it refers only to the ahl al-ḥall wa al-‘aqd. Mohammad Abduh supported the argument that the term ulu’l-amr meant ahl al-ḥall wa al-‘aqd.’[xxxi] According to Fathi Osman, Abduh supported this view-point because he was more inclined to restrict the authority of the rulers by considering the Shūra as the basic authority in the Muslim community and the Islamic state.”[xxxii]

From the above discussion it is quite clear that those who elected the caliphs in the first round were the eminent persons and those who are consulted on public maters are also eminent persons whom include particularly those who are quite knowledgeable, the real Ulema. Obviously, the Ulema are mostly needed for doing ‘ijtihād’ whenever necessary based on the Qur’an, Prophetic traditions and the earlier precedents. Here, two important questions can be raised if the modern form of democratic system is accepted. Firstly, what if the general masses are ignorant and they elect either insincere and less knowledgeable persons in the parliament and legislative assemblies? Secondly, what if those who are elected are not the right kind of persons and they are incapable of doing ‘ijtihād’?

According to Fazlur Raḥmān, such apprehensions and objections were “first advanced by those Turks who sought to defend the imperial power of the Sultan against the protagonists of constitutionalism.”[xxxiii] He pointed out that Namik Kamal from Turkey and Muḥammad al-Ghazālī from Egypt refuted such arguments and asserted that general masses possess sufficient wisdom and practical sense to understand the state matters.[xxxiv] Furthermore, according to Fazlur Raḥmān, ‘amruhum shūra bainahum’ implies that “their common affair is to be decided by their common and mutual consultation and discussion-not by an individual or an elite whom they have neither elected nor sanctioned.”[xxxv]

Yet the problem remains unresolved. For instance, can any law made by the legislators be accepted to the Muslims even if it contradicts the Qur’an and the Sunnah only because it is passed in the elected legislature? As mentioned earlier, for Iqbal the abolition of the distorted caliphate in Turkey and the formation of the republican government is based on “sound ijtihād.” But could Iqbal accept the whole secularization programme of Ataturk and the subsequent secular governments in Turkey, Egypt and in all other Muslim states only because they are elected governments, by any chance? Could Iqbal accept absolute sexual and reproductive rights demanded by the feminists in some contemporary legislative assemblies which are supported by the majority members in some countries only because they are discussed and accepted in the assemblies? All these show that modern election method and deliberations in the parliament though appear to be nearer to Islam but both in their spirit and actual practice, they are far away from the Islamic concepts of ‘Shūra’ ‘ijtihād and ijmā‘ Hence modern election method and parliaments cannot guarantee a good government unless those who rule and those who are ruled mutually aim and work for the common good. In other words, democracy as such cannot be regarded as a good government acceptable to Islam unless those who are in power are God-loving people and they aim at the general good of the people and make the laws based on the spirit of the Qur’an and the Sunnah for all the good of the people.

From the above discussion, it is quite evident that although the elective and consultative principles of democracy are accepted by Iqbal as compatible to Islam, these principles are not totally free from problems and risks in secular democracies.

Iqbal’s Rejection of Secular Foundation of Democracy:

Iqbal’s rejection of the secular and material foundation of democracy is rooted in his comprehension of the Islamic concept of Tawḥīd, the unity of Allah and the unity of life. Tawḥīd, for Iqbal, is the unifying force which joins the spiritual and material aspects of life into a single and the united entity of life. Unlike the dualistic concept of life of the West which separates ‘matter’ from spirit’ according to Iqbal, in Islam ‘all this immensity of matter constitutes a scope for the self-realization of spirit’.[xxxvi] For this reason, there is no bifurcation between ‘mosque’ and state and ‘all that is secular is therefore sacred in the roots of its being’.[xxxvii] In fact, for Iqbal, distinction between the Church and the state does not exist in Islam. He writes:

That according to the law of Islam there is no distinction between the Church and the state. The state with us is not a combination of religious and secular authority, but it is a unity in which no such distinction exists. The caliph is not the necessarily the high priest of Islam; he is not the representative of God on earth… In fact, the idea of personal authority is quite contrary to the spirit of Islam.[xxxviii]

This unified approach to life in Islam is antithetical to secularism, nationalism and democracy. Iqbal was quite aware of this fact. He points out the main difference between democracy in Islam and democracy in Europe:

The Democracy of Europe-fear overshadowed by socialistic agitation and anarchical originated mainly in the economic regeneration of European societies…..The Democracy of Islam did not grow out of the extension of economic opportunity, it is a spiritual principle based on the assumption that every human being is a centre of latent power, the possibilities of which can be developed by cultivating a certain type of character.[xxxix]

Democracy in the West being originated from the economic regeneration of European societies is secular and materialistic by its very nature. It mainly caters to the material life of a society leaving the spiritual aspect altogether. Consequently, democracy in the West tends to move away from moral and ethical values. This secularist and materialistic orientation of Western democracy is totally rejected by Iqbal. This is precisely pointed out by Fazlur Raḥmān: ‘the essence of his (Iqbal’s) criticism is that the Western democratic societies aim only at accomplishing material ends, and that the average Western man is devoid of any vision of a higher moral social order.’[xl]

Fazlur Rahman also points out that according to Iqbal, ‘the error does not lie in the democratic forms and processes but in their lack of ethical and spiritual concerns and their orientations and value system’.[xli] Therefore, for Fazlur Raḥmān, “Iqbal was undoubtedly a democrat”[xlii] since he appreciated democratic forms and processes although he rejected democratic value system. Obviously, Iqbal’s rejection of the democratic value system lies in his strong belief in the unity of life which joins the spiritual and the material aspects of life into one single entity.

Further more, Iqbal’s concept of the sovereignty of Sharī‘ah which demands ultimate loyalty to Allah also contradicts secular democratic principles. Iqbal states: “It (Islam) demands loyalty to God, not to thrones. And since God is the ultimate spiritual basis of all life, loyalty to God virtually amounts to man’s loyalty to his own ideal nature.”[xliii] Besides this, in his Rumūz i Bekhudī, he writes:[xliv]

What is it that infuses one breath in a hundred hearts?

It is one of the secrets of faith in Tawḥīd!

Faith and Wisdom and Law all spring from it,

It is the source of strength and power and stability!

There is no god but God” is the capital of our life!

Its bond weaves our scattered thoughts together!

Thus, Iqbal looks at Tawḥīd not merely as a verbal faith in the unity of God and unity of life but a spring from which flows ‘wisdom’ and ‘laws’ to reign supreme in society and state. Supremacy of Islamic laws implies supremacy of Allah’s will, the Divine will. In other words, Allah’s will which is expressed in the Qur’anic injunctions and Prophetic traditions on all aspects of the life of man and society at all levels should be prevailed supreme in the state. In short, Allah is the one who possesses sovereignty and people are His vicegerents on the earth. This implication of Tawḥīd goes entirely against the main tenet of democracy, popular sovereignty. In secular democracy, it is the people who possess the right of making the laws, and also executing and adjudicating the laws. In the formulation of laws it is not necessary for the people in legislature to refer to the scriptures, the Qur’an, the Bible or any other religious text. People are sovereign and independent to make their own laws based on man-made ideologies, man-made constitutions or in line with the programmes of the ruling parties. Therefore, there is a possibility in democracy that the ‘laws’ made by the people in the legislature may contradict the ‘will of God’ and even the ‘will’ of some good people in the state. Here, it is important to remember Rousseau, who emphasized that the ‘general will’ of the people should be a ‘good will’. However, there is a great possibility that people who are making laws in a democratic government are not ‘good’ and therefore, the laws that are made by them are not based on ‘good will’. Thus there are two clear risks in a secular democracy. Firstly, that “general will” may contradict the ‘Divine will’ because those who are making the laws may or may not refer to the Divine laws. Secondly, the ‘general will’ may not be the real ‘general will’ as characterized by Rousseau because those who are making the laws may not be necessarily good people. Hence, ‘general will’ in secular democracy need not be’ good will’ rather it can be a ‘bad will’ which is neither based on the good will of the good people nor it is in harmony with the laws of God.

Whereas, for Iqbal Islamic concept of Tawḥīd demands from the ‘man of belief’ (mard-i-mu’min) submission of his will to the will of Allah. Iqbal describes it in these words: [xlv]

He subordinates everything to God:

His seeing and not seeing, his eating and drinking and sleeping!

In all thy action let thy aim be to draw nigh to God,

That His Glory may be made manifest by thee!

Hence, according to K. G. Saiyyidain, the (mard-i-mu’min), ‘man of belief’ of Iqbal is one who “lives his life in the name of the Lord, dedicating all his powers to the working out of His increasing purpose on earth, thus qualifying himself for the position of God’s vicegerent”.[xlvi] Thus, man is a ‘vicegerent of God in Islam not a sovereign, not also a part of popular sovereignty. This implies for Saiyyidain ‘a rejection of all fears except the fear of God, a surrender of our will and purposes to His increasing purpose’ [xlvii]

In other words, in Islam, the true believers even if they are in the legislature and engage in the law-making process, they remain as vicegerents of God Hence they refer to the Divine laws while making the laws so that ‘their will’ should not be contradicting the ‘Divine will’. It signifies that in Islam no believer submits to another believer or a group of believer rather all submit to God alone, while making, executing and adjudicating the laws. This Islamic principle is fundamentally different from secular democracy where people make, execute and adjudicate the laws without necessarily looking into the laws of God, because they consider themselves sovereign. In practical sense, those who are elected by the people for the parliament and assemblies (law-making bodies) become the rulers and the rest have no way than to follow them or resist them as opposition with varying rates of success. It means that there is a great risk in Western secular democracy of degenerating into despotism, particularly, if those who are in power do not reflect the good will, rather their own ‘selfish will’ based on their own economic and political interest. For this reason, Iqbal once said the following on democracy: [xlviii]

The Democratic system of the West is the same old instrument

Whose chords contain no note other than the voice of the Kaiser,

The Demon of Despotism is dancing in his democratic robes

Yet you consider it to be the Nilam Pari of liberty.

Islam does not tolerate any form of despotism. Whether it is despotism of single monarch or despotism of some people in power. Iqbal says: ‘Subservience to others is a proof of the self’s immaturity! Rise superior to such leaning, O bearer of the cross.’ [xlix] At some other place, he writes: ‘Learn the inner meaning of Muhammad’s message, Rid yourself of all deities but God’.[l]

An important characteristic of democracy as pointed out by Iqbal is that “it has a tendency to foster the spirit of legality. This is not in itself bad; but unfortunately it tends to displace the purely moral stand point, and to make the illegal and the wrong identical in meaning.”[li] This tendency of democracy becomes too harmful if the rulers in democracy become despotic and tends to legalize the wrong. This tendency of democracy is totally anti-Rousseaun. It contradicts his concepts of civil liberty, and moral liberty where people willingly obey the laws since they felt that they reflect their own will because these laws are not only made by them but they are made for their own good. Contrary to this in cotemporary times, in many democratic countries, neither people feel that they are following the laws which are made by themselves nor they feel that ‘their will’ is conjoined with the laws.

It is only in Islam that there is a possibility that the laws made by the Majlis-i-Shūra based on the Qur’an and Sunnah are followed by the believers as their own will because they reflect the will of God and the believers know very well that it is God alone who knows perfectly well what is good for people. Iqbal writes:

A man becomes a Muslim only when the commandments and prohibitions of the Qur’an appear to him as his own desires. He would not then think that his endeavour to imbibe good morals, a taste for worship, aversion for ugly deeds and spiritual evils were a compliance of some strict authoritative orders of an unforgiving master. Instead, the proclivity to doing good and avoiding obnoxious deeds should arise from his own inner depths.[lii]

Thus, according to Iqbal, a true Muslim is one who enjoys a true moral liberty even superior to the moral liberty of Rousseau. In Rousseau, an individual enjoys moral liberty when he realizes that his will is conjoined with the laws of the state which he has made for himself. Whereas, in the case of a true Muslim, he enjoys moral liberty because he realizes that he is following the laws which are based on the spirit of the Islamic texts, the Qur’an and the Sunnah and that his will is conjoined with the will of God. Therefore, when he follows the Divine laws, he does not feel that they are burdensome for him but he willingly follows them as though they are his own desires and will.

The same message is conveyed by Iqbal in the following poetic verses:

Shariat sprouts from the depths of life.

Darkness gives way before its light

and turns it into illumination.

If all the world of man were to accept prohibitions enjoined by it as prohibitions for all of them, the social structure built in its light would last forever.[liii]

According to Muhammad Munawwar, the true believer of Iqbal feels that “to behave in the best manner possible is not burdensome direction imposed on him from out side, it rather oozes out of his own spirit.”[liv] In other words, such a spirit of following the Divine laws willingly is hidden within the nature of a true believer. Further, Munawwar explains that for Iqbal, when such conformity between the nature of man and the principles of nature take place, it stands for a proof in respect of the individual concerned that he or she have become a true believer.”[lv]

All these views of Iqbal on Tawḥīd and on the supremacy of Sharī‘ah and on the ‘man of belief’ go entirely against the secular foundation of democracy and its important principle, popular sovereignty.

According to some scholars, Iqbal rejected democracy because he had less confidence on the masses and also because of his high vision of a perfect man (mard-i-kāmil) who resemble the superman of Nietzsche. Following poetic verses of Iqbal are quoted by such scholars to illustrate this point: [lvi]

Keep away from Democracy: Follow the perfect man,

For the intellect of two thousand asses cannot bring forth a single man’s thought.

Democracy is a system where people are counted not weighed.[lvii]

However, a deeper analysis of the above words of Iqbal along with his other socio-political ideas reveals that Iqbal never despises masses and Iqbal’s vision of “Perfect Man” is not the same as the superman of Nietzsche. This can be illustrated through the following words of Iqbal: [lviii]

Nietzsche, however, abhors this “rule of the herds,” and hopeless of the plebian, he bases all higher culture on the cultivation and growth of an Aristocracy of supermen. But is the Plebian so absolutely hopeless?…Out of the plebian material, Islam has formed men of the noblest type of life and power. Is not, then, the Democracy of early Islam an experimental refutation of the ideas of Nietzsche?

Thus, Iqbal unlike Nietzsche does not abhor common masses. In fact he asserts that the earlier historical Islamic experience refutes the ideas of Nietzsche. Mazharuddin Siddiqui presents following observation on this issue: [lix]

Iqbal’s idea of the ‘Great Man’, the Mard-e-Mo’min or Mard-e-Qalandar is not the undemocratic idea of a single superman who sums up all possible greatness in himself and leads the community unopposed, almost in the manner of a dictator. In fact it is quite within the bounds of possibility that the community may be led by a number of supermen working in cooperation with one another and resolving their mutual differences by means of free discussion.

The above observation of Mazharuddin seems to be acceptable. However, it cannot be denied that Iqbal in the above quoted poetic verses has bitterly criticized democracy-comparing masses with asses and pointing out the importance of a Perfect Man. On this point, Mazharuddin contends that ‘Iqbal is not so much opposed to the democratic form of government as to the rule of a few untalented persons. Whenever a democracy comes to be governed by persons of a low calibre, who have neither intellect nor vision, it is likely to bring disaster to the people.”[lx] He also argues that if the leadership of democracy is dynamic and possesses high calibre and broad vision, it can be successful.

Mazharuddin also points out the importance of educating people in democracy. He writes: “Political democracy is a necessary means of educating the people in the exercise of their rights, ….”[lxi] It seems important to remember here that Rousseau has greatly emphasized the importance of providing civil education to the youth. He was deeply influenced by Plato on this issue who proposed state controlled system of education. Both Plato and Rousseau wanted that the state should infuse in the people from the beginning of their childhood the love for the state and loyalty to the state. They should be schooled and disciplined in such a way that they would know what is ‘good’ and what is ‘virtue’ and should be ready to give their abilities and services to the state. According to Rousseau, such an education would help people in the formation and expression of ‘good will’.

A crucial question arises here: In the contemporary times, do we find any democratic form of government, where such an education is provided to both the ruled and the rulers so that the ‘general will’ should be moulded as a ‘good will’? Contrary to it, it is generally observed that although many democratic nation-states strongly follow the state-controlled system of education, but the spirit behind this education is neither Rousseaun nor Platonic. According to a general observation, in most of the modern nation-states, education is not provided to inculcate ‘good will’ in the people, but to rationalize and justify the “bad will” of those who are in power as the “good will”! This may be called as the politicization of knowledge in the modern nation-state system. But this is a fact that in many cases those who are in power are neither philosopher-kings[lxii] who know what is “virtue” and who aim at the establishment and supremacy of “virtue” nor they represent Rousseau’s “good will” of the good people. In fact, some rulers in contemporary democracies though talk about the ideals of democracy but sincerely follow the advices which Machiavelli[lxiii] offered to the rulers that cheating, killing, deception, fraud, force and any such evil act is justified for the acquisition, retention and expansion of power. Instead of making and promoting “good will”, they preoccupy themselves in gaining the knowledge of “bad” advised by Machiavelli, so as to use this knowledge of ‘bad’ pragmatically according to the necessity.

In such state of affairs, can democracies work for the good and the wider interest of the people, if the rulers in democracies follow Machiavellian doctrine-ends justify the means? Does not it mean that in such conditions, democracy would turn into a government of the bad people, by the bad people for the good and bad people? It implies that there is a great risk of democracy degenerating into what we prefer to call as ‘democracy,’ rule of the demons. As monarchy may degenerate into “tyranny” if a monarch becomes a tyrant, so also democracy may degenerate into “democracy” if the people who are in power turn out to be the demons.

Hence, the most important factor for a good government seems to be the supremacy of good over bad and this is possible if those who are in power are good and aim at the establishment of good. It is the reason that Iqbal remembers Machiavelli as “that Florentine worshipper of Untruth,”[lxiv] who” wrote a new code for the guidance”, for rulers. Iqbal writes about Machiavelli: [lxv]

His mind fashioned new patterns (of mischief)

His religion made the state into a deity

And presented what was evil as good!

He kissed the feet of this deity

And tested truth on the criterion of profit!

One of the solutions to the above discussed problem of good “leadership” for a good government lies in good education. Such an education should be provided in the state that can produce good rulers so that they can make good laws representing “good will” not the “bad will”. Obviously, such an education should not be God-secluded, rather God-centred. Nothing much can be expected from state-controlled secular education that is imparted to the young generation in secular democracies. Education which is devoid of God cannot bring forth God-loving and God-fearing leaders who can strive to give God a central place in laws, politics and society. Again, it is the Islamic philosophy of education which can alone perform this task much better than any other secular philosophy of education.

According to Iqbal, education has a higher purpose to “develop the Divine even in a plebeian and thus open up before him an infinite future”.[lxvi] As explained by Saiyyidain, according to Iqbal, education helps man in “discovering God in man, of developing God-like qualities in him and building up a world worthy of his habitation.”[lxvii] Iqbal strongly believed that knowledge “gives man power which should be subordinated to religion. If it is not subordinated to religion, it is a satanic force.”[lxviii] Iqbal further emphasized that ‘if the power of knowledge is inspired by religion, it is the greatest blessing for mankind.’[lxix] It is quite clear that Iqbal’s philosophy of education is diametrically opposite to the educational philosophy that is operated in those secular democracies where knowledge is bifurcated into so called religious knowledge and modern or secular knowledge. Neither God-secluded education nor secularism which are the hallmarks of Western democracies are accepted by Iqbal. According to Iqbal, education should be inspired by religion so that God-centred education can produce God-loving leaders who can make the laws based on the Divine guidance and who can truly represent the “good will” because their will is conjoined with the “Divine will”. Saiyyidain explains this point of Iqbal’s philosophy in concrete words: “….there is room for that communion with the Self and with Nature which prepares one for spiritual communion with the Absolute or with God.”[lxx] Thus, believers whose will is conjoined with the Divine will are most suitable people for leadership unlike those who rebel against God and make themselves sovereign. It is the reason that Iqbal condemns those Western secular democracies where neither people are prepared for their right nor the rulers are prepared to be virtuous and God-conscious. Unprepared people are elected by unprepared people not on the criterion of virtue and God-consciousness but on the number of votes. Esposito could fully comprehend Iqbal’s criticism of democracy at this point. He writes:

He (Iqbal) believed that the success of a democratic system was contingent upon the preparedness of its members. A democratic system might be than ideal given the constituents of the society. Thus, Iqbal did not accept the absolute democracy of undeveloped individuals. This is at the heart of his criticism of modern Western democracy: “Democracy is a system where people are counted but not weighed.[lxxi]

No doubt, Iqbal aspires for such a society which should be constituted by “more or less unique individuals presided over by the most unique individuals possible.”[lxxii] This most unique individual is none other than a man of belief, mard-e-mu’min whom he sketches in the following words: [lxxiii]

The hand of the mu’min is the hand of Allah

Dominant, resourceful, creative, efficient!

Born of clay, he has the nature of light

A creature with the attributes of the Creator!

From the above discussion it is quite evident that most of the concepts and ideas of Iqbal as discussed above strike the very secular origins of democracy and its values.

Besides all these, Iqbal’s philosophy of “Khudi” ego (selfhood), and his philosophy of Divine vicegerency also go entirely against the temperament and nature of secular democracy. In secular democracy, the relation of man with God is limited and formal. Whereas, a believer in Islam who is conscious of his “Khudi” selfhood, strives to make himself as perfect as possible and as nearer to God as possible to establish the Kingdom of God on the earth. According to Iqbal, man cannot be a complete individual as long as he distances himself from God. He becomes a complete person ‘mard-i-kāmil’ when he comes nearer to God and “he absorbs God into himself.”[lxxiv] Thus ‘the true person not only absorbs the world of matter by mastering it, he absorbs God Himself into his Ego.”[lxxv]

In order to become unique and absorb God, the Ego passes through three stages- “(a) Obedience to the law, (b) self-control, which is the highest form of self-consciousness or Ego-hood (c) Divine vicegerency.”[lxxvi] Divine vicegerency is identified by Iqbal “as the third and the last stage of human development on earth.”[lxxvii] At this stage, man becomes “the vicegerent of God on earth,” “the most complete Ego,” “the goal of humanity,” the acme of life both in mind and body.’[lxxviii] He established the ‘Kingdom of God on earth’[lxxix] which implies the establishment of “democracy of more or less unique individuals, presided over by the most unique individuals possible on this earth.”[lxxx]

In fact this strong man of belief (mard i mu’min) who is conscious of his selfhood according to Saiyyidain, becomes the architect of his destiny and a co-worker with God in His Plan.”[lxxxi] This is expressed by Iqbal in these words: [lxxxii]

Exalt thy ego so high that God Himself will consult

Thee before determining thy destiny.

Thus, having exalted himself, this mard i mu’min sets out for the performance of Divine vicegerency: [lxxxiii]

“Tis sweet to be God’s vicegerent in the world

And exercise sway over the elements.

God’s vicegerent is as the soul of the universe;

His being is the shadow of the Greatest Name

He knows the mysteries of part and whole,

He executes the command of Allah in the world.

Thus, Iqbal’s ‘man-of-belief,’ (mard i mu’min) is one who is conscious of his (Khudi) selfhood. This consciousness enlightened him about his position of a vicegerent of God and enables him to execute the laws of God in the world. This whole philosophy of Iqbal of ‘selfhood’ (khudi) goes against secular democracy which makes people ‘sovereign and independent from God and destroy their self- consciousness and secrets of self (khudi) from them.

Conclusion

History bears witness to the fact that during the period of absolute monarchies in the West, people badly required some ideology to fight against the absolute monarchs. They found in democracy a good weapon for them to fight against absolute monarchs and form their own government based on the consent of the people. They were quite successful in their attempt since absolute monarchies slowly transformed into constitutional monarchies and then into representative democracies. But the story of the Muslim world is totally different. The Muslim world during its earliest phase followed (Shūra) consultational and election method, then gradually transformed into different forms of monarchies, and empires. In all these forms, the concept of Shūra was neglected in varying degrees. Later, during this period of negative political transformations when the Muslim rulers and masses became weaker and colonisable, they were colonized by the Western imperial powers.[lxxxiv] By the time the Muslim lands attained independence from the colonial masters, the Western leaders made sure that they left behind them the ‘Babu class’ as what Arnold Toynbee called those who had no interest what so ever in Islamic mission but they have their own vested interest. Since then, most of the Muslim rulers in most of the Muslim states continue to come from the “Babu class.” Hence, presently the question which is standing before the Muslims is not the installation of democracy for the continuation of the rule of ‘Babu class’ people but the establishment of Divine vicegerency, the rule of the vicegerents of Allah SWT to establish the laws of God, supreme in the world. This needs the establishment of Caliphate or Islamic political order or Islamic state. But this does not however mean that Muslims should resort to force to install Islamic political system. All those Islamic movements and Islamic parties which are striving for the establishment of Islamic state all over the world are quite aware that “there is no compulsion in Islam.”[lxxxv] For this reason they are participating in the elections so that they come to power on the consent of the people not on the basis of “force.” However, the whole problem of the Islamists coming to power is not so simplistic. The Islamists have to fight against three anti-Islamist forces: two internal within the Muslim states and the other external. Under external comes the Western powers that are anti-Islam and are ever ready to help the dominant internal class, the ‘Babu class’ against Islamists for their own ‘vested interest’ – political hegemony. They may be referred to as ‘Hegemu class.’[lxxxvi] There is one more internal force, which comprises of those pseudo-intellectuals who are always opportunists and are ready to serve the secular political leadership in return of some positions and privileges. They may be referred to as ‘Oppu class.’[lxxxvii] They run big “think tanks” under the patronage of secular political leaderships and help the secular cause and deceive general masses. Thus there is a well-planned and well-knitted collaboration among anti-Islamist forces from local to international level and from both the sides, intellectual and political. The anti-Islamist collaborators become as undemocratic as possible in the name of democracy to block all the roads of Islamists to power with the argument that the Islamists would not form a democratic government. Is this collaboration democratic? If not, then is it not more urgent and imperative for Islamists who aim to establish peace and justice on the earth and who may be classified as ‘Justu class’[lxxxviii] to concentrate seriously on how to combat against the undemocratic strategies of the so-called democrats instead of engaging in the debates on the compatibility or incompatibility of democracy with Islam?

This short study on Iqbal’s views on democracy has clearly revealed that Iqbal’s acceptance of some democratic principles that are compatible with Islam does not mean that Iqbal has totally accepted democracy. The secular philosophy of those democratic principles are far away from Islamic concepts of Shūra and ijmā‘ and is incompatible with Islam and is therefore rejected by Iqbal. It is also pointed out in the paper briefly that democratization in the real sense of promoting “liberty” and “equality” to the people has never been the mission of the West, rather it has its own vested interest behind it. In such state of affairs, it seems pertinent for Islamists to reflect and formulate some suitable strategies to face the undemocratic strategies of anti-Islamist collaborators and set proper direction to attain their goal-revitalization of Islamic civilization. Revitalization of Islamic civilization entails the establishment of all socio-political and economic institutions based on the Divine Laws, which reflect the Divine will. When the Divine laws prevail supreme in the Islamic civilization, people would enjoy real liberty and freedom because they would follow the Divine laws willingly. This further shows that people can enjoy real liberty only through Divine vicegerency not through popular sovereignty.

Anti-Pakistan and pro-western and pro-Indian Pakistani writers keep writing about Pakistan negatively to breed doubts and misgivings about the foundations of Pakistan, two-nation theory, Pakistan’s ideology, its identity and even Pakistan’s national anthem. The liberal class in particular remains in the vanguard to spread feelings of despondency. Fascinated by Indian and western cultures, this class steadfastly defends foreign cultures and their acts of omission and commission and enthusiastically sing the tutored themes to undermine Pakistan. The western educated intellectuals and writers among them feed half-truths and lies to confuse the youth that had neither seen British imperialism, nor the real face of bigoted Hindus, or had experienced the pangs of Pakistan movement and travails of partition of India.
It is now an established fact that irrespective of infrequent extension of hand of friendship, India has never desired to live as peaceful and friendly neighbor with Pakistan. 65 years is a long period but time and tide has not mellowed down the undying hatred of Indian leaders’ for Pakistan. They have neither forgiven Jinnah nor reconciled to the existence of Pakistan. They still dream of absorbing Pakistan into Indian Union so as to fulfill their age-old dream of illusive Akhand Bharat either by force of arms or through deceptive means. They have artfully used media and psy ops as tools to poison the minds of Pakistanis and to draw cleavages between various communities with a view to fomenting regionalism and weakening the very foundations of Pakistan. The US, Europe and Israel harboring ill-will for Muslim Pakistan buttress Indian efforts.
In order to weaken Islam which acts as the sole unifying factor, India has been resorting to never ending tricks to undermine Islam. Apart from its own efforts, it has been making good use of the liberal brigade in Pakistan which helps in distorting facts of history and creating sense of disillusionment and despondency among the younger generation about Pakistan and its future. Since all the leading English newspapers like Dawn, The News, Daily Times as well as journals and publishing houses are controlled by seculars, and are funded by foreign powers; it becomes that much easier for India and western powers to promote their agenda.
India’s first major success was in former East Pakistan where Indian inspired language controversy became the cause of east-west estrangement. Subsequently real and imaginary grievances were aired on the plea that the west was prospering at the cost of east. Punjab was projected as the chief villain to widen the gulf. After dismembering Pakistan and creating Bangladesh, Indian psy operators shifted their focus entirely towards Sindh so as to poison the minds of Sindhis. Their insidious efforts resulted in birth of several anti-Pakistan political parties/groups in interior Sindh such as Sindhu Desh led by GM Sayyed. Politics of Sindh were further vitiated after the delivery of MQM in Karachi which sharpened rural-urban divide. Sindh is in throes and Karachi where target killings have become a norm has become a wounded city.
India is currently concentrating on Balochistan where East Pakistan type conditions have been created. Rebellious Baloch Sardars belonging to Bugti, Marri and Mengal tribes in rural Balochistan fully aided by RAW and other foreign agencies are waging a separatist movement. While non-locals, Hazaras and pro-government Baloch are being routinely gunned down by shady outfits like BLA and BRA, the non-locals have migrated from Baloch held regions. The minds of Baloch youth and women are being poisoned and brainwashed to hate Pakistan, particularly Army and Punjab. Neither national anthem is sung nor Pakistan flag flown in most Baloch controlled educational institutions.
Although the separatist elements form a tiny minority and majority of Baloch as well as all other nationalities including largest minority of Pashtuns are patriotic Pakistanis and abhor separatists, human rights activists and some foreign paid NGOs support the cause of rebels. They feel disturbed when security forces take counter measures to safeguard national interests and to protect the lives peaceful citizens and dub their preventive acts as human rights violations.
In her write up ‘Our search for a forgotten identity’ dated April 14 appearing in The News, Kamila Hyat seeks to defend the acts of Baloch rebels. She maintains that only miniscule size of population in Balochistan prevents the struggle to assert independence from succeeding. Rather than castigating non-singing of national anthem in Baloch run schools/colleges, she casts aspersion on the anthem defining it as controversial and enigmatic. She makes fun of it by asserting that none in Pakistan understands its meanings since it is a mix of Persian, Arabic and Hindi. She also underplays Urdu saying that it is depicted as being more refined and higher in lingual hierarchy. Even English has not been spared since she says that only a tiny minority speaks this language. If that be so, one fails to understand, which language would have been more suited for our anthem.
Being so highly educated, one wonders why she is so ignorant about the history of Urdu which has vowels from Arabic, Persian and Hindi languages. Persian was the official language throughout the long rule of Mughals until it was axed by the British in 1835 and replaced with English so as to shatter the culture and civilization of Indian Muslims and render them uneducated. While Urdu was declared as a lingua franca for Pakistan by Quaid-e-Azam, and it continues to be so, Kamila sees language crises in Punjab where according to her tens of thousands of parents do not converse in Punjabi with their children and that Punjabi is not formally taught in educational institutions. What has she to say about that category of elites which converse more in English and very less in their mother tongue?
All these 64 years, Pakistanis have been singing national anthem with gusto. The lyrics and powerful composition is so motivating that it inculcates a sense of pride and oneness among all Pakistanis irrespective of their religion, caste, ethnic and sectarian diversities. I am nonplussed what impelled Kamila to harbor dark thoughts about the anthem about which none has ever raised any objection. There can be no other reason to this lunacy than to please India and Bloch rebels.
To encourage separatists in Balochistan, she subtly draws a comparison by saying that today Bangladesh is much more prosperous than what it was when it was part of Pakistan and is socially and economically better than Pakistan. I may suggest to her to take a trip to Bangladesh and interact with the people and gain firsthand information how they feel towards Pakistan and India. Majority of the older generation fondly recall the good old days of united Pakistan and curse India. Despite Indian massive propaganda over 60% of the youth in Bangladesh is pro-Pakistan. This becomes evident on the occasion of India-Pakistan cricket match played in Dacca. Pakistan has helped Bangladesh in development of its armament industry, air force, air defence and several other fields.
Kamila pricks the minds of Pakistani youth by suggesting that it is confused about Pakistan’s identity, why was it created, what it is about and what precisely was gained by seeking independence and who we are. She expresses doubts whether Pakistan is based around a commonality of religion or other factors. It is people like her who are befuddled and are neither here nor there. They are ashamed of their identity, culture and religion and their country of origin from which they draw all benefits and social status. Sailing in two boats, they are Pakistanis in name only but in practice are attached to western and Indian cultures. They call themselves Muslims but know little of their religion and yet censure those who are better versed with Quran and Hadiths. To please their mentors, they dub Islamists as uncouth, fundamentalists, extremists and terrorists and hold them responsible for all the ills in our society.
Kamila blames Gen Ziaul Haq for pushing Pakistan from South Asia to Middle East by way of introducing Arabic as a subject in schools and emphasizing on Islamic teachings as in Saudi Arabia and changing the dress code from trouser to shalwar kameez (she prefers to call it keffiyeh to sell her point that Zia imposed Saudi culture). Great majority in Pakistan has all along preferred shalwar kameez which is affordable and comfortable. She laments that Zia tried to mould our centuries old South Asian identity into West Asian. She is oblivious to the historical fact that it was secular Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who after the 1971 debacle had scraped western pacts of SEATO and CENTO and gravitated Pakistan towards West Asia to gain greater security from aggressive India. Islamic conference hosted by him in 1974 was a step in that direction.

Notwithstanding that 65% of our population has its origins in Central Asia; we cannot detach ourselves from our roots in Arabian Peninsula from where Islam under Holy Prophet (pbuh) sprouted. The first brick of Islam was laid in the Indian subcontinent by Muhammad bin Qasim in 712. The Arabs made Sindh an extension of Ummayad Empire and ruled it for over 300 years. Kamila and scores of her like-minded friends do not mind Indian and western culture seeping into Pakistan but feel unduly alarmed at the prospects of Muslim culture permeating into our society.

Ignoring Indo-Pak antagonism and following in the footsteps of Indian sponsored group ‘Aman-ki-Asha’, Kamila admonishes unnamed hawks who in her view are preventing Pakistan from falling into Indian lap. She strongly feels that salvation of Pakistan rests in forging friendship with India. I hazard to ask her, starting from Jinnah which Pakistani leader espoused animosity with India? All our leaders, whether civilian or military, endeavored to develop close ties with India, but their efforts were thwarted by hawkish Indian leaders. Didn’t Musharraf go out of the way to solve Kashmir dispute which is the real bone of contention between two neighbors? Is India prepared to solve the dispute in accordance with UN resolutions and the aspirations of people of Indian occupied Kashmir? Is India prepared to stop constructing dozens of dams over rivers flowing into Pakistan in violation of Indus Water Treaty? Will India agree to build even-handed and mutually beneficial ties with Pakistan? Answer to all will of course be in negative.
While Indian historians have distorted history of Muslim rule in India by undermining Muslims rulers and overplaying Hindu leaders, Indian youth is fed with fanciful myths to glorify Hindus ancient past. However, India presses Pakistan that its history books lionizing Muslim rulers should be amended since it bred extremism.
Now that the real actors behind 26/11 attacks are getting exposed, Kamila has tried to give a new twist to the incident that Mumbai attacks may have been engineered by hawks in Pakistan (meaning ISI) to prevent the two archrivals to embrace each other. She has described India as a holy cow ever desirous of peace and Pakistan as a devil fomenting hatred against India and polluting the minds of the younger generation. Either she is extremely naive, or she considers us all to be dimwitted.
I may like to remind her that Vajpayee had signed peace treaty with Pakistan in January 2004 with evil intentions. While he was signing the agreement RAW was busy giving final touches to its covert war plan to be unleashed from Afghan soil in concert with other intelligence agencies. Eastern border including Line of Control in Kashmir were made peaceful so as to launch cultural invasion in Punjab. The youth, artists of all hues and the liberal class were its targets for subversion. Publication of negative stories about Pakistan’s identity and national anthem are a consequence to Indian cultural onslaught. Kamila’s article devoid of judiciousness is simply nauseating.

Is India prepared to solve the dispute in accordance with UN resolutions and the aspirations of people of Indian occupied Kashmir? This is how Washington and London’s new slave-soldier in Asia is destabilizing the region, while the Am-Brit media keeps the pressures on Pakistan, Iran, Russia and China. Read how SAFMA was created with RAW’s help. This report uncovers some juicy details about RAW’s tactics, straight from the mouths of some of the foreign journalists who have worked in New Delhi. Names are mentioned here. Learn also how Indian operatives managed to lay their hands on the archive of PTV, Pakistan’s state-run channel.

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN—This is the age of information, the IT and above all the media, both print and electronic. It is said that after the renaissance of media across the world, the wars are fought and won with the media being on the frontline.

Be it US attack on Iraq or be it a terror attack in India, the media is immensely used to propagate one’s views and perception. The media endeavors are extensively manipulated to change the world opinion in own favor and against the enemy. Almost all the governments have given a free hand to their respective intelligence agencies to manipulate media and fund the media organizations and individuals to gain the required results. No matter if it is the CNN journalists embedded with US troops invading Iraq or the venom emitting Indian journalists and TV anchors targeting Pakistan after the Mumbai carnage, the intelligence hands are always there to direct them and to fund them.

However, the Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) has taken the issue more seriously than its contemporary agencies in the region and even across the world. A comprehensive investigation into the matter by the team of investigative journalists of The Daily Mail reveals that in fact RAW moved into the direction of utilizing media factor almost 30 years back. In the mid 80s, when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India, RAW sent a media related proposal to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) which was approved straight away.

According to this proposal, RAW was given a free hand to use as much as required funds to create a solid grip on national and international media. Initially, RAW came up with a long term project through which it RAW started short listing young, potential and ambitious Indian journalists and later started helping them penetrate them to different media organizations across the world. Today, according to rough estimate, 90 percent of the Indian or Indian origin journalists working in different media organizations throughout the world have direct or indirect links to RAW. They are exploited by the intelligence of their mother country to promote Indian perceptions and deliver according to RAW’s requirements. The success of RAW in this direction can be gauged from one fact that it has managed to get Indian journalists inducted even in leading Chinese media organizations like China Daily, the Beijing Review, etc.

With a massive population of emigrants, it is not unusual to see Indians getting jobs in news organizations. Many of them have relatives back in India. This is the weak point exploited by RAW to recruit Indians working for foreign media. The situation is worse if the target was an Indian from a minority background, or from the lower caste Hindus. In this case, RAW does not need to resort to its usual intimidation tactics.

CONTACTING FOREIGN REPORTERS IN ISLAMABAD

In the 2nd phase, RAW started funding local media organizations in India and also started buying the services of journalists working in the foreign countries’ leading media organizations. According to a Japanese journalist, who worked in India for a Japanese news agency for about 3 years, India-based foreign journalists are very well “look after” and “entertained” by RAW officials who develop interaction with these foreign journalists through operatives who develop friendships in the initial phase as influential and mysterious friends. These India-based foreign journalists are at least once a year, are offered a vacation trip to Dubai where their boarding, lodging and even shopping, are all paid off by their newly acquired influential and rich “friends”. According to some reports, RAW is practicing the same with certain Islamabad-based foreign journalists.

The Daily Mail’s investigations reveal that RAW started another project around five years back under which airtime is purchased on popular English language international television channels and then during that air time, special programs are televised to promote India’s view point with RAW’s perspective. India Hour on BBC is one of the examples in this direction.

The Daily Mail’s investigations further reveal that RAW launched a mega project to control regional journalists and to bring them to a secret RAW platform when it established South Asian Free Media association (SAFMA) a few years back. The SAFMA, the darling baby of RAW has so far been focusing on highlighting the issue of Indian occupied Kashmir with RAW’s perspective and nothing much or more. The members of SAFMA, whenever asked as to how they manage to generate funds for the highly lavish functions and seminars under its banners since all of them are paid employees of different media organizations of South Asia, remain mum on this point.

Back home, RAW is not only funding individual columnists and intellectuals but is also comprehensively funding a number of newspapers and television channels. RAW not only makes direct payments to a variety of regional and English language newspapers but also arranges advertisement support for these media organization. Many of these newspapers are run as “projects” of RAW and all assets are owned by the agency itself.

Some the newspapers that are getting regular RAW funding and patronage include India News, Aajkal, Al-Hind Al-Yom [Arabic], Asia News, Bharat Observer, The Christian Messenger, Daily Excelsior, Daily Roshni, The Daily India, Dakhshan bharat, Deshdoot, The Echo of India, Daily Greater Kashmir, Daily Jaihind, Kashmir Times, Kashmir Observer, Maharashtra Times, Nagalnd Post, Daily Phayul, Rajdhani Times, Daily Saij etc. These newspapers despite getting direct funding from RAW, also have the blessings of getting government advertisements and advertisements of leading Indian Business houses, having extraordinary relations with RAW. Furthermore, all the Indian airliners have strict orders from RAW to purchase these newspapers for on-board circulation. Apart from these newspapers support, RAW has also ‘gained” the “services” of different columnists, reporters and analysts at top media organizations like Times of India, Indian Express, The Hindu and Hindustan Times etc.

Coming towards the Electronic media of India, RAW has made remarkable achievement in diluting media with Intelligence endeavors. It is not only funding different anchors and analysts but RAW has established a huge network in shape of ZEE T.V. Though RAW spends a huge chunk of money to achieve targets by funding 9x News, Aajtak, NDTV 24×7, Times now, TV9, Time TV etc, yet it runs the most venomous news Channel the Zee TV.

Zee News’s offices are considered to be Media Headquarter of RAW.

The investigations of The Daily Mail further reveal that RAW controls whole paraphernalia of media network including ZEE TV and Films Network, Asian News International (ANI) etc. The ZEE network retains the pivotal position in this RAW controlled propaganda and misinformation spiral. It was actually RAW that has been the master mind behind the establishment of ZEE Television Network. According to our sources the proposal for establishing a private sector television channel actually under the control of Indian intelligence agency was first presented to the Late Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The proposal could not materialize at that time as Mrs. Gandhi had certain reservations about giving more powers to RAW for she suspected it of being behind her earlier electoral defeat at the hands of another Late Prime Minister of India Mr. Murar ji Desai.

However, Indian movie star Amitabh Bachan who was a personal friend of Rajiv Gandhi got the cue. His brother later reportedly siphoned part of the Rs.64 crore kick-backs of the Swedish Bofor guns deal into setting up a private satellite channel by the name of TV Asia.

TV Asia enjoyed certain patronage from Indian government and intelligence agencies though it was financed privately. In return RAW enjoyed certain leverage on TV Asia; nonetheless its officials continued the campaign for having their own channel. The breakthrough was achieved when a high ranking RAW operative Vasant Parekh found a willing partner in the Chairman of Essel Group of Industries, Subash Chandra.

The Essel Group was mainly involved in the business of entertainment and amusement parks. Being an adventurous entrepreneur, Chandra indicated his willingness to Vasant Parekh for investing partly in the RAW’s satellite TV venture provided it also shared a big portion investment and backup support. RAW hierarchy did not require much persuasion to dole out a hefty amount of US$ 25 million as an initial participation share in the project. The deal was struck and the ZEE Television Network was formally launched in 1992 with Subhas Chandra as the Chairman and Vasant Parekh as the founding member on its Board of Directors. It was agreed to induct and employ a certain number of RAW operatives in all cadres of the network. RAW personnel were thus recruited amongst the program producers, anchors, newscasters, and even amongst the marketing and business managers.

The arrangement facilitates RAW to send its agents undercover to Pakistan and even other countries. Having a media tag gives these operatives an easy access to cultivate a number of personalities in the target country, which would have been otherwise difficult. The broad outline of the propaganda objectives of ZEE TV defined by RAW were:

—Repeat the Indian rhetoric of cultural and social uniformity of South Asian sub-continent, which is a cover for Indian hegemonic designs in the region, and especially with regards to Pakistan. RAW affiliated Indian media commentators make it a point to repeat this in order to nullify Pakistan’s unique ethnic, cultural and historical attributes.

—Malign Pakistan by a deliberate negative projection of the events and developments in the country. The aim is to systematically build a poor image of Pakistan may it be in the context of internal political developments, religious or social events, women issues, child labour, brick kiln workers, Ahmedi or Christian minorities, sectarian clashes, the MQM-ANP-BLA and other movements, foreign policy or bilateral relations with India. Although human rights violations, social, cultural, religious and economic problems exist in India at a much gigantic proportion, the Indian media and journalists abroad are tasked with downplaying these issues.

—Projection of India as a modern secular and progressive state which is the world’s largest democracy;

—Propagation of India’s foreign policy objectives and its position on Kashmir;

—Promotion of Hindu mythology through serials based on mythology as well as soap operas telecast on the network;

In pursuance of this policy ZEE lays special emphasis in cultivating prominent personalities in Pakistan for accomplishing the ideological agenda. Bigwigs in Pakistani entertainment and show biz, poets, writers, eminent sportsmen and politicians are a prime target.

The common modus operandi is that Pakistani celebrities are invited as chief guests or special guests to various ZEE television musical shows and events. A lot of praise is showered, calling them artists whose talent is not restricted by any boundary, frontier or divide and that the people of the two countries love each other, only the politicians conspire to keep them separated. Overwhelmed by the tremendous show of hospitality the artist either ends up unwillingly endorsing the host’s views or says something that is construed to be negating the ‘Two Nation’ basis of Pakistan’s independence. According to credible information RAW also sponsors organizing of performances, shooting of videos and securing of contracts for Bollywood movies and entertainment agencies for some of these personalities belonging to the Pakistan entertainment, film and music industries.

The Daily Mail has learned that RAW’s further tightened its noose on media during the first government of BJP under the then Minister for Information and Broadcasting Parmod Mahajan. RAW had in the meanwhile already taken control of the struggling television news agency Asian News International (ANI) founded by an ambitious cameraman Prem Parakash. When the agency ran into financial troubles RAW came forth to help it with idea of producing South Asia News line which all the Indian entertainment TV Channels not producing their own news bulletins were force to telecast. Parmod reportedly threatened these channels with the sweeping powers under the PRASAR BHARATI (Indian Broadcasting) ACT, 1990 Chapter IV, 23; “Power of Central Government to give Directions” if they did not comply. Even his successor Sushma Swaraj kept calling shots at the media also making coercive use of the draconian Indian National Security Act, 1980. Three Advisory Bodies have been pivotal in this regard to streamli mittee. The DFF amongst other things virtually controls the films dealing with news, current events and documentaries. RAW has a permanent representation on this Committee which can use any pretext to penalize channels not receptive of its directives.

Our correspondent Saira Ilyas adds from London: The enormous success of ZEE in South Asia and Middle East encouraged its sponsors to target the Asian viewers in Britain and Europe. The prime objective was to disillusion the expatriate Pakistanis and Kashmiris from their ideological basis. Britain being the home of largest Kashmiri refugee community outside Asia has become a cause of concern for the Indian establishment. The growing influence of Kashmiri community in the political circles of UK, their frequent protests over the human rights violations in the Indian held Kashmir and demand for the right of self-determination for Kashmiris is often embarrassing for the Indians.

ZEE UK was therefore launched in 1995. The ZEE’s strategists, however, realized that Braitain and Europe was a different ball game. To lure the Pakistani expatriates it was decided to telecast a mix of Indian and Pakistani programmes. It is learnt that a team was sent to Pakistan to negotiate the purchase of PTV programmes for telecast on ZEE UK. ZEE was able to procure from the PTV library many classical dramas, the most recent hit telecasts, musical programs, special occasions telecasts for Eid, Muharam, Ramadan including and other purely Islamic religious programs. These programs were reportedly sold to the ZEE at throw away prices. The PTV establishment of the time credited itself for having sold the programs with no other clientele. Little did they know the diabolic use that ZEE had planned for these programs. However, PTV authorities maintain that some of its programs were recorded off air by a Lahore based spurious company and sold to ZEE TV. Subsequently PTV obtained a court injunction to stop ZEE from telecast of some of its programs. Nonetheless this gap is now filled by the private productions that have mushroomed in Pakistan over the last few years.

The ZEE UK program managers ran an extra-mile in their endeavors to establish it as a neutral TV of the entire South Asian community in Europe. The propaganda against Pakistan was deliberately kept sublime in the initial year of its launching. However, it continued its policy of reporting negative developments in respect of Pakistan and black outing positive aspects may it be as non political news as winning a cricket match by Pakistan. Nonetheless, ZEE’s one sided hype during events such as the Kargil conflict and later during the Mumbai terror attacks gave away any semblance of neutrality that the channels had been portraying. The propaganda blitz unleashed by ZEE since the take over by the BJP appointed RAW administration has exposed the real face of the channel and the Indian government’s propaganda campaign; the Central Press Accreditation Committee (PIB), Film Advisory Committee (DFF) and Hindi Advisory Committee.

It is popularly believed in the South Asian community in UK that ZEE-RAW nexus was fully unveiled during the RAW staged hijacking drama of an Indian airliner in December 1999. Throughout the hijacking drama ZEE newscasters and expert panelists many among whom were actually undercover RAW officials, continued to narrate RAW orchestrated script like parrots in an unbelievable frenzy. ZEE was further exposed by completely biased reporting following the RAW staged spate of attacks in India after September11 such as the attack on the sham State Assembly of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Parliament, US Consulate Calcutta as well as the 2002 border standoff between Pakistan and India and lately the Mumbai carnage.

RAW prolific media network however received a setback when its sponsored Reminisce Television Network (RTN) could not succeed in UK and Europe. The free to air transmission of RTN’s Channel Asia 1 could not get enough advertisements due to over crowding of the market by many Asian Channels. The RTN also had an Urdu Channel ANJUMAN to target Pakistani viewers besides Gujarati, Lashkara (Punjabi), Bengali and other regional language channels. RAW is now concentrating on ZEE and SONY Entertainment Television (SET).

This is just one case that The Daily Mail has presented here for its valued readers across the world. The Daily mail is near to complete its investigations about RAW’s relations to many other Television Channels and newspapers of India and Aajtak-RAW nexus would be the 2nd of this series of investigative reports. The Daily Mail’s investigations indicate that RAW is spending at least 500 million to 700 million rupees on media organizations and individuals per year and ZEE TV project is not included in this budget.

Islamabad—Pakistan is bound to come back as a great nation with one of the largest economies in the world in next ten years.

These were unanimous views of the speakers at a “National Seminar on Pakistan 2011-20” organised Nazriya Pakistan Council, Islamabad (NPC) held at Aiwan-i-Quaid, Fatima Jinnah Park here on Saturday evening. The seminar was presided over by Dr. Salman Shah, former Finance Minister and economic expert.

The function was attended by a large number of people from different walks of life, including students and prominent women.

Besides Salman Shah, the other speakers were Zahid Malik, Chairman NPC and Editor-in-Chief Pakistan Observer, Dr. Zafar Altaf, ex-Chairman PARC and agricultural expert, Professor Dr. Riaz Ahmad, historian, Chaudhry Fazl-e-Haq, former Interior Secretary, and Ali Moeen Nawazish, Cambridge University world record holder.

The speakers said at present, Pakistan is going through a black patch but it has all positive elements to become a nation playing its leading role not only in the region but also in the world.

“Its manpower, agriculture, industrialists, traders, youths, intellectuals, educationists, students, sportsmen and administrators are skilful and proficient that they can collectively take nation to new heights,” the speakers said.

Dr. Salman Shah, who specially came from Lahore to attend the seminar said the British Army in India dispatched a communication to London in 1947 advising its government to establish its close relations with West Pakistan as this area was strategically very important in all of India to exercise influence in the region, particularly the oil- rich region of Arab peninsula.

He said Pakistan population will reach the figure of 200 million in 2020 but with its high trajectory growth the GDP can grow to $450 billion from its present $ 180 billion in next ten years. At present, the economy is going down but it has all positive elements to grow on fast track.

Location wise, there are many opportunities for Pakistan as the post-war Afghanistan can be a big boost for Pakistan. The entire resource rich Central Asia region is coming out of its teething problems and looking for trade and gas exports and logistic connections. Pakistan has the sixth largest and perhaps the youngest population in the world. With big mineral wealth, agriculture can give big boost to economy, he said. “Pakistan can become a great nation”.

Former Interior Secretary and a prominent intellectual, Chaudhry Fazl-e-Haque in his speech quoted Allama Shabbir Ahmed Usmani, a close associate of Quaid-i-Azam, telling him that the Quaid had told the Allama that he had dreamt Holy Prophet (PBUH) before his return to India to lead the Muslims. According to Allama Usmani, Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) in that dream ordered the Quiad to return to India from London and lead the Muslims of South Asia to their destiny. The Quaid had asked Allama Usmani not to mention his dream to any one during his (Quaid’s) life. Chaudhry Fazl-e-Haque said, it is quite clear that the Quaid had returned to India from his self-exile in London when he was ordered by the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) to provide leadership to the Muslims.

He said the nation needs to follow the ideals of the Quaid to achieve progress and overcome current challenges.

Chaudhry Fazl-e-Haque was an associate of Allama Shabbir Ahmad Usmani and he also had many chances of meeting the Quaid in New Delhi before emergence of Pakistan.

A prominent historian Prof Dr. Riaz Ahmed, in his speech said that the Quaid-i-Azam believed that the state of the Pakistan would ensure protection to the minorities as required by Islamic ideals. He regretted that some people were wrongly interpreting the 11 August, 1947 speech of the Quaid in the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan.

He said Quaid-i-Azam wanted the nation to follow his motto of Unity, Faith and Discipline. He believed that Quaid’s motto was a sure recipe for progress.

He lauded efforts being made by Zahid Malik as Chairman NPC for promoting awareness among people about the ideals of Quaid-i-Azam.

Dr. Zafar Altaf, a prominent agriculture expert, in his speech, pointed to the unlimited possibilities of development in the field of agriculture. He gave several examples to prove his belief that there was tremendous scope for economic development of the country through progress in the field of agriculture and sky was the limit.

He said Pakistan was utilizing only 12 percent potential of available water for agriculture. The country needs to optimize the use of water for greater benefits. He suggested that there should also be efforts to improve land use.

“Pakistan could learn from the experience of China to increase its agricultural production and ensure self sufficiency on long term basis, “ he emphsised.

Cambridge University world record holder Pakistani student, Ali Moeen Nawazish said the Pakistani youths can play a great role in making Pakistan a highly developed country.

“Pakistani youth had remarkable talent and they only needed positive direction,” he said.

He said the Independence day demands that “we pledge to devote our full energies for the development of the country”.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, Chairman NPC and Editor-in-Chief Pakistan Observer Zahid Malik, said there is a strong need to give a message of hope to the bewildered nation. Pakistan has come to stay and all those who have developed a negative thinking about Pakistan will be disappointed.

He pointed out that “the purpose of the seminar is to bring experts on front foot to give a positive message to the nation”. The NPC, he said has planned to unearth and display Quaid-related relics in the halls of Aiwan-i-Quaid. A request has been forwarded to the Government departments including Archives to bring out Quaid- related material stuffed in boxes for display as NPC wants to bring the people of Pakistan closer to Quaid-i-Azam’s legacy.

“This is Quaid’s Pakistan and it is bound to emerge as an important country in the comity of nations”, he said. The NPC will continue its efforts to spread message of the Quaid to each and every corner of Pakistan, he said.

USA economy sinking into the deepest ever recession in human history

Dozens of top economists say in a new survey that the chances of the USeconomy slipping into another recession have risen significantly.

The 39 economists polled on August 3-11 put the chance of another downturn at 30 percent – twice as high as three months ago, US Today reported late Sunday. The survey means another shock to the fragile US economy — such as more stock market declines or a worsening of the European debt crisis — could push Washington over the edge. Even if the US avoids a recession, the economists see economic growth at a sluggish 2.5 % in 2012, down from 3.1 percent in April’s survey, according to the newspaper.

The economy must grow above three percent to significantly cut unemployment in the United States . The economists predict the jobless rate will fall slowly, dipping only to 8.8 % in the next 12 months, the report said. Meanwhile, World Bank chief Robert Zoellick warned of a new danger zone ahead for global markets, saying investors had lost confidence in the economic leadership of several key countries. Zoellick said on Sunday that a convergence of events in the US and Europe had rattled investors in countries already struggling to cap sovereign debt issues and unemployment. “What we’ve seen is that confidence is a fragile element of how the market economy works”, he said. “I think that those events combined with some of the other fragilities… have pushed us into a new danger zone. And I don’t say those words lightly“, he added.

China will launch a communications satellite for Pakistan at an "appropriate time" in the coming days, a spokesman said Wednesday. A spokesman for the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province said the satellite, the PAKSAT-1R, will be carried by a Long March-3B carrier rocket. Both the satellite and rocket are currently in good condition, according to the spokesman.

The US central and federal government owns the US Public and the world a staggering amount of $14 trillion, while it annual generation is over $14 trillion. In 2010, the intrest due on this debt stood to $414 billion. The callosal debt has its roots in the citizens demand for imports and credit cards etc. The consumer debt amounts to $2.4 trillion, mortgage debts amounts to $13.2 trillion, debt of US companies amounts to $20.8 trillion. In all, the dept is around $50.7 trillion. This is more than the combined economies of China, Britain, Japan, Germany, France, Brazil, Canada and Italy multiply by two.
Moreover, over the past few years the imports of US have continued to increase compared to its exports. The country claiming to be superpower, now owes the world $500 billion. In simplistic terms, the US Debt crises has made America bankrupt from the perspective of book keeping. Its spending is out of control, and its debt continue to inflate.
This present state, makes one wonder, as to how the US got in to such a position? The answer is appallingly simple. The US expenditure has always eclipsed the amount it possessed. And it has done so by granting itself this exclusive right, while opposing it for others. And due to its project as a superpower, and the status of dollar, the US has been able to keep this hypocritical imbalance tucked away from the limelight, only until now. Uptill now, it has been America’s political power that had allowed it to continue its spending policies, and print currency to meet its debts. The blunt fact today is, that this power is headed for a steep fall as various indicators show.
Today in America, the Republicans and Democrats have been debating about increasing the debt ceiling i.e the amount the government can borrow, for which the US government needs permission of Congress. The Irony today is that the US borrows to repay previous debts, however this is not the first time it has raised the debt ceiling. A Simmilar instance took place in februray 2010 as well. In fact since September 1981 when it was first raised over the $1 Trillion level, this ‘debt ceiling’ has been raised 33 times to date.
In the words of Paul Krugman, a Noble Laureate: “The facts of the crisis over the debt ceiling aren’t complicated. Republicans have, in effect, taken America hostage, threatening to undermine the economy and disrupt the essential business of government unless they get policy concessions they would never have been able to enact through legislation. And Democrats – who would have been justified in rejecting this extortion, altogether – have, in fact, gone a long way toward meeting those Republican demands. And, oh yes, the President had some big skin in the game.”
The harsh reality today is, that it’s not just in economy that America has went bankrupt. In political arena too it is increasingly pushed towards bankruptcy, while its moral standing has already been lost.
America at present is facing numerous political challenges in regions of the world which only a few years ago it completely dominated. The prime example of this is the Middle-east. For years the Arab Dictators guaranteed stability and subservience to US interests in the region. Today as the Arab spring knock out one dictator after another. The interests of US, are in a serious jeopardy. It region is shifting from being uni-polor to multi-polar, where its hegemony faces growing contest.
Also, over the access of Middle-east oil, the US is faced with increasing competition from Russia and China. India, Japan and European Union are playing an ever more assertive role in the region to fulfill their needs of oil.
The US lost its moral standing, as its lies on weapons of mass destruction were exposed. Its human rights record was torn apart by the images from Abu Gharib and Guantanamo bay. Its policy of exporting democracy and freedom with bombs and oppression has been shred apart over the last decade in front of the international community. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan has also heavily and negatively impacted the US economy. Its troop with drawl strategy is merely a shift from direct operations to indirect operations conducted by Rulers, which shamefully are subservient to US interests, a strategy which costs less.
In such a scenario, we can find that history has significant lessons to offer. At the time of their demise, both the British Empire and the Soviet Union were engulfed by unsustainable debt. The economic crises played a fundamental role that led to the collapse of their superpower status. Today the situation in the US is similar.
The US today, is witnessing a decline in the value of dollar. And echoes by China for a global reserve currency, amount to adding salt to its injury. The ever increasing debt has pushed America to rely more and more on foreign nations for economic assistance.
At this crucial juncture, it’s ironic how America repeatedly attempts to project its ‘super power’ status. It does this, by hollow attempts of bringing freedom to Libya, hypocritical claims of siding with people in the Arab world, while for decades it supported the very tyrants that oppress their own masses, and pretending as if countries like Pakistan, were inadvertently dependent on US.
Today’s ‘Sick man’, has much to worry in its own backyard, and certainly posses no moral, economic or ideological standing to solve the problems countries faced elsewhere. Our intelligentsia must realize that the ‘Super power’ of yesterday, is a mere ‘Sick man’ of today. And while the US is engulfed in its deepest crises, there is a genuine opportunity for us to break away from the shackles of servitude.
However it is important to realize that for Pakistan in particular and the Muslim world in general the solution is not to exchange subservience of one power for another, by looking towards powers in the east like China. For this will only provide temporary relief. We should revert to a model of governance and economics that has stood the test of times. The Caliphate, which emanates from the Islamic ideology, is a system free from the inherit faults of a capitalist system.
Presently, while America desperately looks for a way out of its debt crises, and China has voiced its suggestion for a global reserve currency, and the European Union, is scrambling to handle its own mess, and confine it to Greece, the world at large awaits in apathy for an alternative. As dark, as it seems, the stage is set, and the audience awaits for a new, radical and comprehensive solution. In such a scenario with communism in the dustbin of history, and capitalism at the brink of rupture, the emergence of a Caliphate, can usher the dawn of the much needed positive change.

Pregnant Afghan woman killed in US/Nato Terrorists attack

A pregnant woman is among the three Afghan civilians who have been killed in an attack by US-led foreign forces in northeastern Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, US-led French troops opened fire on a vehicle in the Nijrab district of Afghanistan’s Kapisa province in northeast of the strife-torn country, leaving the three civilians dead, the state-run BBC reported.
According to the report, the victims were a man, a pregnant woman and a child. Several others were also injured in the shooting.
The French ambassador has apologized, but Afghan President Hamid Karzai said no apology could bring back the dead and he called on the US-led NATO forces to protect Afghan civilians.
There has recently been a surge in civilian casualties resulting from attacks by US-led foreign troops in Afghanistan. Hundreds of civilians have been killed in US-led airstrikes and ground operations in various parts of Afghanistan over the past few months.
Civilian casualties by US-led foreign forces have also been a major source of friction between Kabul and Washington.
Karzai has repeatedly condemned the attacks and called on US-led foreign forces to stop killing civilians.
Afghans have held several angry protests against NATO over the issue of civilian casualties.
The invasion of Afghanistan took place with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the country. More than nine years on, however, Afghanistan remains unstable and civilians continue to pay the price.

Five Afghan children have been injured, some seriously, in a strike by a British attack helicopter.
The youngsters were working in a field in Helmand province when they were hit by stray bullets from an Apache gunship which was targeting the Taliban.
They were accidentally strafed by a burst of fire from the chopper’s devastating 30millimetre cannon as the aircrew went after insurgents entering a mud-walled compound.
The wounded children were flown quickly to Camp Bastion, the main British base in Helmand, for urgent treatment.
Two of them were seriously injured although their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. It is not known if they have lost limbs in the incident.
The other three had less severe wounds and were expected to be released from hospital yesterday MON.
The incident, which happened in the Nahr-e-Saraj district on Saturday, is a huge blow for the Nato-led military coalition in Afghanistan.
The coalition, known as the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf), has made reducing civilian casualties a priority in a bid to win the ‘hearts and minds’ of local people and persuade them to shun the Taliban.
More than 400 civilians were killed by foreign and Afghan forces last year and over 2,000 killed by Taliban-led insurgents, according to United Nations figures.
Officials are investigating the accident which is likely to focus on the accuracy of the Apache’s cannon and the speed with which they fire.
The MoD is expected to offer compensation to the families of the children.
A MoD spokesman said: ‘On July 23, UK forces used an Apache attack helicopter to conduct a strike operation against positively identified insurgents who were seen operating in Nahr-e Saraj (South).
‘Regrettably, five local children working in a neighbouring field were injured during the strike. The five children were taken to Isaf medical facilities before being taken on to Camp Bastion where they received medical care.
‘Any incident involving civilian casualties is a matter of deep regret and we take every possible measure to avoid such incidents.
‘A shooting incident review is now under way and UK officials in Afghanistan are keeping the provincial governor abreast of the results of the investigation.’
An Isaf statement said: ‘We are aware of an incident in Nahr-e-Saraj where a known insurgent was targeted by a coalition helicopter.
‘As a result of the engagement, five local children were regrettably injured.
‘Subsequently, the injured were evacuated to an International Security Assistance Force medical facility and are currently being treated.
‘Isaf is currently assessing this event, and more details will be released as they become available. Coalition forces take every allegation of civilian casualties seriously.’

‘Israel tortures Palestinian prisoners’

A Palestinian rights group says the Israeli Supreme Court has allowed Israeli interrogators to use banned methods of torture against Palestinian prisoners.

On Thursday, the Gaza Strip-based al-Mezan Center for Human Rights said the tribunal has allowed a “loophole” in its definition of torture, which permits practice of “torture with impunity,” the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported.
Accordingly, the interrogators could ask to be allowed to use the prohibited methods “if they believe a detainee poses an immediate threat to public safety.”
The rights group further said that Israel continues to use administrative detention against an excessively high number of Palestinians and for a prolonged period of time.
The rights body also said that Israeli jailors have practiced torture on Palestinian prisoners 85 times between May 2009 and April 2011.
One Palestinian detainee, Nadedh Ali Abed-Rabbo, says he was bound in stress positions, subjected to sleep deprivation and loud music and was spat on during a 42-day period of interrogation.
Gaza-residing Abed-Rabbo said he fainted four times and lost 12 kilograms during the questioning. He also said the harsh methods had made him seek medical care for loss of hearing, nervous attacks and chronic pain in the head.
There are around 9,000 Palestinians in Israeli detention centers. Their families have for long been calling on human rights organizations and groups to intervene in order to secure the release of their loved ones, many of whom have been incarcerated without charge, trial and sentence.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees, nearly 200 Palestinian inmates have so far died in Israeli confinement either under torture or due to medical negligence.
The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, B’Tselem, has recently said that at least 40 Palestinian prisoners have suffered chronic illnesses like cancer, renal failure and strokes.
The Israeli central prisons fail to offer the constant medical care required for the ailing prisoners.
Rights groups say Palestinian prisoners are being denied basic rights and subjected to harsh treatment in Israeli detention.

In the last three decades, we have witnessed a consistent trend in U.S foreign policy towards Muslim world, which involves interference, pressurizing, intimidating, and outright wars. Sometimes there is a tendency to belittle this trend by linking it to only few America presidents. However the reality is that this trend has continued in the tenure of both the democrats, as well as republicans. The question arises here – Why Does the US Subjugate and Colonize the Muslim world?
The answer lies in the fact that America as a state, has built itself firmly by embracing the secular doctrine, which separates between “church and state”. Laws governing public affairs are legislated based on the whims and desires of human beings. Consequently, the secular doctrine will motivate the individuals who adhere to this way of life (i.e. Capitalism) to seek material benefits at any cost. The Capitalists do not limit themselves to spreading secularism, but work to dominate other nations as it is in their benefit to do so. For example, between the 16th and 19th century, Italy, England, France, and other European nations embarked on campaigns to colonize the Muslim world to force the Ummah to adopt their way of life and to steal our resources. Since America upholds the same secular doctrine as these other nations, it now also seeks to colonize and subjugate the Muslim world, as is clear from its actions in Iraq, its support for Israel and, most importantly, its support and imposition of ruthless tyrants, like Karimov, Zardari, and Karzai, across the Muslim world.
The objective to dominate the Muslim world was expressed in the “Carter Doctrine” in 1980 when then U.S. President Jimmy Carter stated in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan: “An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force.” Carter established the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force (RDJTF) and gave it the responsibility for combat operations in the Gulf. Three years later, Ronald Reagan elevated the RDJTF, naming it Central Command (CENTCOM). CENTCOM has been the main American presence in many military operations, including the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. With this understanding, it is clear that the objectives of American foreign policy run counter to those of the Muslim Ummah.
The reason for U.S imperialism in particular against the Muslim world, is more than just natural resources. Islam poses a potential ideological challenge to the secular doctrine. As Samuel P. Huntington said in his book ‘Clash of Civilization and the Remaking of the World Order’.
“Islam is the only civilization which has put the survival of the west in doubt”. The states which have embodied the secular doctrine, fear a possible revival of a Khilafah state, which embodies the Islamic doctrine.
This is a major concern for the Capitalists, because the Islamic doctrine has laws, visions and strategic objectives coming from a distinct source, i.e Islam. In a Khilafah state all public affairs including economics, politics, the social system, the educational system and the judiciary are all governed by the commands and prohibitions of Islam. The manifestation of these systems into one entity – the Khilafah State – has the potential to outpace the Capitalist system by leaps and bounds. As it happened before, the Khilafah State will compete as a superpower. This is something that does not benefit the Capitalists and as a result they are trying to prevent the Muslim Ummah from working towards political unification. Consequently, the Capitalists will work day and night to ensure that the Muslim Ummah remains subjugated
Political experts in the west, have already begin pointing to the possible emergence of this Khilafah state. Niall Ferguson, Professor of History at Harvard University, in an interview to ‘The Telegraph’(14th March) warned, that their is “a tiny possibility we get western-style democracies in the Middle East”, and he warned, by stating it is “More alarming to think about a restored caliphate”
Today, the uprisings in the Muslim world, referred to as Arab spring are resulting in the fall of one dictator after another. Interestingly, a political expert, Patrick J. Buchananm, who has been a senior advisor to three American Presidents wrote “If Islamic rule is an idea taking hold among the Islamic masses, how does even the best army on earth stop it?”
As the west, in Particular the U.S, seeks to answer this by further aggressive use of force in the Muslim world, and by bribing new faces that replace toppled dictators. The paradox here is: the Intelligentsias, in particular the generals in the armies of the Muslim world having to decide between repressing their own people or resisting U.S imperialism, are only natural to be predisposed to the idea, of a Khilafah state.

Hindu Terror influenced Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik

Goals of Indian Hindu nationalists were identical to Justiciar Knights, Anders Breivik claimed
Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik hailed India’s Hindu nationalist movement as a key ally in a global struggle to bring down democratic regimes across the world.
‘2080: A European declaration of independence’ lays out a road map for a future organisation, the Justiciar Knights, to wage a campaign that will graduate from acts of terrorism to a global war involving weapons of mass destruction — aimed at bringing down what Breivik calls the “cultural Marxist” order.
India figures in a remarkable 102 pages of the sprawling 1,518-page manifesto. Breivik’s manifesto says his Justiciar Knights “support the Sanatana Dharma movements and Indian nationalists in general.” In section 3.158 of the manifesto, he explains that Hindu nationalists “are suffering from the same persecution by the Indian cultural Marxists as their European cousins.”

“APPEASING MUSLIMS”
The United Progressive Alliance government, he goes on, “relies on appeasing Muslims and, very sadly, proselytising Christian missionaries who illegally convert low caste Hindus with lies and fear, alongside Communists who want total destruction of the Hindu faith and culture.”
Even though Hindus who are living abroad “get an eagle’s view of what’s happening in India, Indian Hindu residents don’t see it being in the scene.”
Breivik’s manifesto applauds Hindu groups who “do not tolerate the current injustice and often riot and attack Muslims when things get out of control,” but says, “this behaviour is nonetheless counterproductive.”
“Instead of attacking the Muslims, they should target the category A and B traitors in India and consolidate military cells and actively seek the overthrow of the cultural Marxist government.”
“It is essential that the European and Indian resistance movements learn from each other and cooperate as much as possible,” he concludes. “Our goals are more or less identical.”

Breivik lists the websites of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the National Volunteers’ Organisation, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad as resources for further information.
The manifesto pledges military support “to the nationalists in the Indian civil war and in the deportation of all Muslims from India.” This is part of a larger campaign to “overthrow of all western European multiculturalist governments” and evict “U.S. military personnel on European soil.”
India is one of several countries — including Russia, the Philippines, China and Thailand — where Breivik hopes his successors will fight.
He uses the work of historians K.S. Lal and Shrinandan Vyas to point to the threat posed by Islam to Europe, saying their work has established that millions of Hindus were killed in a genocide during 1000-1525 AD. N.S. Rajaram, another historian, is quoted as saying India’s “political class have been so debilitating that they continue to live in a state of constant fear.”
Breivik’s manifesto envisages that this future organisation would hand out a “multi-cultural force medal,” which would be awarded for “military cooperation with nationalist Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish and/or atheist forces (non-European) on Hindu, Buddhist or Jewish territory. These efforts must be directed against Jihadi or cultural Marxist forces, personnel or interests.”
The medals would include a “Liberation of India Service Medal,” which would be awarded for “assisting Indian nationalist forces to drive out Islam from Indian territory.”
Breivik’s Indian-made combat badges, revealed by The Hindu as having been contracted to a workshop in Varanasi, were the first in this series of battle decorations.
His manifesto acknowledges that lives will be lost in the war, and calls for the organisation to “provide and subsidise a standard edition of the Justiciar Knight tombstone” for those who fell in battle.
Since a “European tombstone carver, preferably specialised in traditional tombstone architecture, is likely to charge more than 5000-10000 Euro in order to create the stone,” Breivik suggested that “producers in low-cost countries should be contacted for the task of creating one or multiple stones in the future.”
He acknowledged that this “might sound hypocritical considering the fact that cultural conservatives in general oppose Indian or Chinese membership in [the] WTO and the fact that we generally prefer in-sourcing as many industries as possible. However, conserving our funds is a central part of our struggle.”
Even though Breivik’s Knights would fight shoulder to shoulder with Hindu nationalists, his vision for their rights in a post-revolutionary Europe is limited. The manifesto envisages the creation of a “servant class,” made up of non-Muslim individuals from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India.
“During their stay,” the manifesto envisages, “they will work 12 hours a day for the duration of their contracts (6 or 12 months) and are then flown back to their homelands.” “These individuals,” it goes on, “will live in segregated communities in pre-defined areas of each major city.”

~The Two Nation Theory~

The ideology of Pakistan stems from the instinct of the Muslim community of South Asia to maintain their individuality by resisting all attempts by the Hindu society to absorb it. Muslims of South Asia believe that Islam and Hinduism are not only two religions, but also two social orders that have given birth to two distinct cultures with no similarities. A deep study of the history of this land proves that the differences between Hindus and Muslims were not confined to the struggle for political supremacy, but were also manifested in the clash of two social orders. Despite living together for more than a thousand years, they continued to develop different cultures and traditions. Their eating habits, music, architecture and script, are all poles apart. Even the language they speak and the dresses they wear are entirely different. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan The ideology of Pakistan took shape through an evolutionary process. Historical experience provided the base; with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan began the period of Muslim self-awakening; Allama Iqbal provided the philosophical explanation; Quaid-i-Azam translated it into a political reality; and the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, by passing Objectives Resolution in March 1949, gave it legal sanction. It was due to the realization of Muslims of South Asia that they are different from the Hindus that they demanded separate electorates. When they realized that their future in a 'Democratic India' dominated by Hindu majority was not safe; they put forward their demand for a separate state.

The Muslims of South Asia believe that they are a nation in the modern sense of the word. The basis of their nationhood is neither territorial, racial, linguistic nor ethnic; rather they are a nation because they belong to the same faith, Islam. On this basis they consider it their fundamental right to be entitled to self-determination. They demanded that areas where they were in majority should be constituted into a sovereign state, wherein they would be enabled to order their lives in individual and collective spheres in accordance with the teachings of Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (S. A. W.). They further want their state to strengthen the bonds of unity among Muslim countries.

The flag of Pakistan As early as in the beginning of the 11th century, Al-Biruni observed that Hindus differed from the Muslims in all matters and habits. He further elaborated his argument by writing that the Hindus considered Muslims "Mlachha", or impure. And they forbid having any connection with them, be it intermarriage or any other bond of relationship. They even avoid sitting, eating and drinking with them, because they feel "polluted". The speech made by Quaid-i-Azam at Minto Park, Lahore on March 22, 1940 was very similar to Al-Biruni's thesis in theme and tone. In this speech, he stated that Hindus and Muslims belong to two different religious philosophies, with different social customs and literature. They neither intermarry, nor eat together, and indeed belong to two different civilizations whose very foundations are based on conflicting ideas and concepts. Their outlook on life and of life is different. He emphasized that in spite of the passage of about 1,000 years the relations between the Hindus and Muslims could not attain the level of cordiality. The only difference between the writing of Al-Biruni and the speech of Quaid-i-Azam was that Al-Biruni made calculated predictions, while Quaid-i-Azam had history behind him to support his argument.

Quaid-i-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah The Ideology of Pakistan has its roots deep in history. The history of South Asia is largely a history of rivalry and conflict between the Hindus and Muslims of the region. Both communities have been living together in the same area since the early 8th century, since the advent of Islam in India. Yet, the two have failed to develop harmonious relations. In the beginning, one could find the Muslims and Hindus struggling for supremacy in the battlefield. Starting with the war between Muhammad bin Qasim and Raja Dahir in 712, armed conflicts between Hindus and Muslims run in thousands. Clashes between Mahmud of Ghazni and Jaypal, Muhammad Ghuri and Prithvi Raj, Babur and Rana Sanga and Aurangzeb and Shivaji are cases in point.

When the Hindus of South Asia failed to establish Hindu Padshahi through force, they opted for back door conspiracies. Bhakti Movement with the desire to merge Islam and Hinduism was one of the biggest attacks on the ideology of the Muslims of the region. Akbar's diversion from the main stream Islamic ideology was one of the Hindus' greatest success stories. However, due to the immediate counterattack by Mujaddid Alf Sani and his pupils, this era proved to be a short one. Muslims once again proved their separate identity during the regimes of Jehangir, Shah Jehan and particularly Aurangzeb. The attempts to bring the two communities close could not succeed because the differences between the two are fundamental and have no meeting point. At the root of the problem lies the difference between the two religions. So long as the two people want to lead their lives according to their respective faith, they cannot be one.

Allama Iqbal With the advent of the British rule in India in 1858, Hindu-Muslim relations entered a new phase. The British brought with them a new political philosophy commonly known as 'territorial nationalism'. Before the coming of the British, there was no concept of a 'nation' in South Asia and the region had never been a single political unit. The British attempt to weld the two communities in to a 'nation' failed. The British concept of a nation did not fit the religious-social system of South Asia. Similarly, the British political system did not suite the political culture of South Asia. The British political system, commonly known as 'democracy', gave majority the right to rule. But unlike Britain, the basis of majority and minority in South Asia was not political but religious and ethnic. The attempt to enforce the British political model in South Asia, instead of solving the political problems, only served to make the situation more complex. The Hindus supported the idea while it was strongly opposed by the Muslims. The Muslims knew that implementation of the new order would mean the end of their separate identity and endless rule of the Hindu majority in the name of nationalism and democracy. The Muslims refused to go the British way. They claimed that they were a separate nation and the basis of their nation was the common religion Islam. They refused to accept a political system that would reduce them to a permanent minority. They first demanded separate electorates and later a separate state. Supreme Court gives govt ‘last 24 hours’

ISLAMABAD – Declining prime minister’s request for more time to submit reply in reinstatement of Sohail Ahmad as Secretary Establishment, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed the attorney general to present PM’s written reaction on the matter today (Friday). As a six-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed hearing of the suo motu case regarding corruption in Haj arrangements in 2010, Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq told the court that the prime minister has been apprised of all the details of the case. He also prayed for more time until Monday for the restoration of establishment secretary. The CJP said that much time could not be given and ordered to submit the answer by today (Friday).

Sohail Ahmed had been made an OSD (officer on special duty) by the government on Tuesday, about two hours after he submitted to the Supreme Court a notification transferring Hussain Asghar, the IG of Gilgit-Baltistan, back to the FIA in the face of a stern court warning of immediate action against him on contempt of court charge for not complying with its orders. Irritated by the demotion of the top bureaucrat for obeying its orders, the court on Wednesday directed the attorney general to personally convey to Prime Minister Gilani the court’s feelings and explain constitutional implications of a deviation from the court’s orders.
During the proceedings, the AGP informed the bench that he met the PM and explained to him the contents of the court’s July 27 order as well as the intrinsic constitutional and other legal provisions. He told the court that the PM has asked him that he would hold another meeting with him (AGP) for his response, and therefore, the PM had requested for granting time till Monday for submitting his response. But the bench refused PM’s request and stated it was not possible to constitute a larger bench continuously for weeks because judges have to attend the court sessions at Branch Registries for taking up general public cases.
The Chief Justice said: “We don’t doubt the good intention of the government but dilly-dally on the issue is not good omen.” The CJP said there is no problem for the bench to pass an order. But the attorney general remarked that the prime minister was not thinking on that lines which the court construed. The chief justice said that Haj scam has brought disrepute to the country internationally. “We are well aware of our constitutional limitations.” But when the employees are sacked, they approach the court for justice. The case was not about a bureaucrat but the rule of law and upholding the constitution, he added. He said it is settled law that after an apex court ruling there is no need of permission from the competent authority. When someone decides that he has to follow the constitution, the implementation of the order is just one-minute delay.

Earlier, the attorney general and FIA officials also informed the court that the FIA officer Hussain Asghar could not be contacted. DG FIA Tehsin Anwer informed the court that IG Gilgit-Baltistan office said that Hussain Asghar has left for Islamabad, while DIG Headquarters said he was in Skardu. He said on oath that there was no pressure on him regarding Hussain Asghar and all his phone numbers are switched off. Efforts are on to contact him at Skardu rest house through wireless, he added. The chief justice said the government is playing hide and seek regarding the Hussain Asghar issue. “How strange it is that an officer of IG level could not be contacted,” the CJP wondered. Justice Arif Hassan remarked it was strange that such a high official could not be contacted, and all the agencies including FIA were looking for him. The court adjourned the hearing till today (Friday).

It has been reported in Sahih Muslim that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“..there will be Khulafa’a who will number many”.

They asked: ‘Then what do you order us to do?’ He (saw) said: “Give allegiance (bay’ah) to them one after another”. And he (saw) said: “If the bay’ah has been given to two Khulafa’a, kill the latter of them.”

In Sahih Muslim it has been reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Whosoever dies without an oath of allegiance (bay’ah) on his neck, he will die the death of Jahiliyyah”

Numbers Prove North Waziristan Not Responsible For Afghan War

Using official American figures and evidences, analyst Ejaz Haider skillfully debunks American claims that Pakistan’s tribal region is the epicenter of Afghan insurgency, and US war casualties.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Should the Pakistan Army launch an operation in North Waziristan Agency (NWA)? Short answer: No.
Is the so-called Haqqani network as deadly for US-Nato-Isaf troops as American official and media blitz suggests? No.
Let’s consider these questions in reverse order.
Going by US and western intelligence and military accounts, the network operates in the velayats of Paktia, Paktika, Khost, Logar and Ghazni. Let’s also add Nangarhar to this list.
Since 2001 to wit, according to the official US list of fatalities, the number killed in these areas from the combined US-Nato-Isaf troops are:

If one adds up the numbers of fatalities, it should be clear that the fighting has been far more intense in the southern, central and north-eastern areas than where the network has been operating, with the exception of Paktika. Also, the eastern provinces combined have seen fewer fatalities this year than the average for one suicide attack in Pakistan.
Which brings us to the pressing issue of operational priorities: What groups should Pakistan operate against — those that are attacking Pakistani people and security forces or those that operate inside Afghanistan? Given limited resources and the stretch faced by the Pakistan Army, any commander would focus attention on the threat in his own area rather than pick up a fight with those who are not fighting his troops. As for the differential in resources, just one figure would be enough.
So far, given US and other fatalities from improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO), a Pentagon agency, has spent $20 billion to develop techniques and equipment to counter the IED threat. Does this number sound familiar? Well, it equals the hyped figure of ‘aid’ that is supposed to have come to Pakistan since 2002 for the latter’s entire war effort, as well as under multiple other heads!
ORGANIZED ATTACKS
FROM AFGHANISTAN UNDER
US WATCH

Pakistan is already facing a full-blown insurgency and urban terrorism by groups based in Fata and just across in Afghanistan. A recent development relates to well-staged and managed attacks from across the Durand Line on its posts in Lower Dir and Bajaur. The pattern of attacks and numbers employed show the attacking force is free to form up inside Afghanistan, has a secure line of communication to the base, can freely advance to the border, ingress, launch a surprise attack and exfiltrate. Surely, with all the radars, sensor-mounted balloons and unmanned drones, such movement should not go undetected. Apparently it does!
THE AMERICAN MYTH
ABOUT THE PAKISTANI EPICENTER
OF AFGHAN WAR
Pakistan’s experience also shows that no one area can be identified as the Centre of Gravity (COG) of this threat. The two US assumptions that NWA is the COG of Afghan insurgency and that once the Haqqani network is taken out, the backbone of the insurgency in Afghanistan will be broken, are wrong and self-serving.
As I wrote in The Friday Times in December 2010, the insurgency does not have a defined COG; there are multiple COGs and command lines are much more diffused than anyone is prepared to accept. There is already dispersal of the leadership and the fighters because of drone attacks. Dispersal and delegation of operations also provide the Taliban the flexibility they require to retain their asymmetric advantage.
The American idea that packing the punch against the Haqqani network — assuming that the network would offer itself as a concentrated target for the convenience of any superior force—would signal to others to come to the negotiating table is unlikely to happen.
In this game, Pakistan will be the loser. NWA does not just house the Haqqani network; it also has Haji Gul Bahadur, elements of the relocated Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), multiple other groups and remnants of al Qaeda. Currently, these groups are geographically confined. If Pakistan goes after them, it will have to face multiple negative consequences, including dislocating more of its population at a time when its build and transfer efforts in other areas have almost stalled and it is already bogged down in Mohmand and Kurram.
The network, currently no threat to Pakistan, would go for a link up with elements hostile to Pakistan and operating only against Pakistani interests. Elements hostile to Pakistan will get reinforced by such a link-up and, while use of force will make the various groups join hands, it will fail to translate into utility of force for the simple reason that the groups would disperse and spread out instead of offering themselves as a concentrated target to a superior force.
That makes eminent operational sense because, rather than losing too many men in pitched battles, the groups will disperse while retaining some fighters to engage advancing columns in combination with the use of area denial weapons like anti-personnel mines, anti-tank mines, ‘victim-operated’ IEDs and booby traps. This means that while they will try to slow down the advance and extract a heavy toll of advancing troops, they would not need to employ the bulk of their forces that are likely to extricate as the operation undergoes.
Pakistan would then be left with two negative fallouts: Future operational linkage between the Afghan Taliban and the TTP and other assorted hostile groups; and dispersal of these groups into other areas. An operation against the Haqqani network will also activate other Afghan Taliban groups against Pakistani security forces which are already battle-stressed, fighting the Pakistani groups affiliated with al Qaeda. That would open another front, currently dormant.
Meanwhile, what about the drones? Why should Pakistan commit ground troops if the drones are as effective as the US says they are and for which reason it is prepared to accept the cost of rising resentment inside Pakistan?
But let’s go higher up the ladder from the operational to the strategic and political. The UN Security Council (UNSC) has delinked the Taliban from its al Qaeda list, sending a signal to the Taliban that they can be talked to if they can prove that they are not linked to al Qaeda. Good move that, one which I have been insisting on before and since US President Barack Obama spoke at West Point. We also have, on the good authority of both Afghan President Hamid Karzai and outgoing US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates that the US is in talks with the Taliban. This makes sense and shows why the UNSC has done what it has.
And why should Pakistan open up a front against the Afghan Taliban when they are now to be potential partners in peace talks?

Pakistan Army Recovered Indian-made weapons in Kurram tribal region

Peshawar: Pakistan’s military has seized a large cache of Indian made weapons during recently launched operation in Kurram tribal region, Sector Commander Brigadier Basharat told media on Thursday.

He said that seized weapons included, heavy guns, Rockets and others sophisticated arms. He added that the operation was being carried out successfully, purging the area from militants.

The commander said the forces had gained control of several areas and would take over control of Manato, an alleged stronghold of Taliban militants, in few days.

He added that the military was using helicopter gunships and artillery against the terrorists.

Sources said the militants using Indian weapons against forces were compelled to abandon huge cache of arms and ammunition when the forces stormed their hideouts in the area, killing more than 40 militants.

Unprofessional and inane are the only words that seem to come to mind when one hears statements such as those lately made by Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen. Let’s not even get started with the CIA-driven driven media that is nothing but a tool for propagating a draconian American agenda.
To quote directly from the CNN website, Admiral Mike Mullen, on Thursday, said that “he believes the Pakistani government “sanctioned” the killing of a prominent Islamabad reporter, Syed Saleem Shahzad, who was murdered in May.” One can be pretty sure that instead of ‘he believes…’ a more honest view would have been that Admiral Mullen ‘would like to believe….’ And will Mullen’s belief be followed up with some credible evidence? That’s quite doubtful because the same report about Mullen’s belief also quotes him saying, “I have not seen anything to disabuse the report that the government knew about this.” Well then, what is Mullen barking about when he has no evidence? He has no evidence but he chooses to make all these statements about what he believes in at a lunchtime question and answer session with journalists at the Pentagon.
Well, why should one be surprised considering the amount of lies the CIA and their media have come up with the past? With their lies spread via the corporate-owned media they have succeeded at manufacturing consent and brainwashing the world on many issues. However, they have a hard time furnishing concrete evidence to back up many of their claims, and the recent supposed Usama Bin Laden killing at Abbottabad is just one example. What makes it worse is that they even manufacture evidence, such as doctored video footage and photoshop images. How embarrassing it was when a dirty little American scheme was uncovered within hours; the Guardian reported that images of a slain Usama Bin Laden were nothing but photoshop gimmicks.
To come back to the main point; while Pakistan still is in the process of investigating the killing of Salim Shahzad, many will hope that Mullen can hand over some credible evidence to the media. Indeed, western news agencies will benefit from this and restore some dignity and credibility that they are badly in need of.

Former Army Chief General Jahangir Karamat has denied the allegations published in Washington Post quoting documents and implicating two former Pakistani Generals in the sale of uranium enrichment technology to North Korea in return for millions of dollars in cash and jewels. In an email to UK’s Guardian newspaper, General Karamat said, “there is not an iota of truth in the allegations against me”.

New York Times urges USZ regime to help replace ISI Chief General Ahmad Shuja Pasha

A leading American Jewish newspaper on Friday urged the USZ government to use its influence in replacing ISI chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, after the so called hypocritically fake evidence implicating the spy agency in the murder of Anti-Pakistan journalist Saleem Shahzad. "The United States (of Zionism) needs to use its influence to hasten Mr. Pasha’s departure. It should tell Pakistan’s security leadership that if Washington identifies anyone in ISI or the army as abetting terrorists, those individuals will face sanctions like travel bans or other measures", The New York Times said in an editorial. "The ISI has become inimical to Pakistani and American interests", the editorial added.

The Times said:

"It’s not clear how high up the culpability for Mr. Shahzad’s murder goes — or whether there are any officials left in the ISI or the army who have the power and desire to reform the spy agency. President Asif Ali Zardari and his government, while not implicated in these heinous acts, have been a disappointment, largely letting the military go its own way. They need to find Mr. Shahzad’s murderers and hold them accountable. And they must find the courage to assert civilian control over security services that have too much power and are running amok. Mr. Zardari needs to speak out firmly against abuses, insist on adherence to the rule of law and join his political rival, Nawaz Sharif, in pressing the security services to change. That can start by insisting on the retirement of Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, the ISI chief, and the appointment of a more credible successor."

It is crucial to note at this point that none of these Zionist media drones have been successful in giving concrete evidence of the Anti-Pakistan journalist Saleem Shehzad's murder which could prove the involvement of ISI, which makes this more probable that killing of Saleem Shahzad was itself a deception plot against the ISI from the beginning and the assassins wanted to utilize it against the ISI as a weapon. Americans experiencing the bitter taste of failure: Afghan Taliban

Wallowing in a devilish arrogance, the Americans and George W. Bush conceitedly ordered military attack on Afghanistan a decade ago. Bush boasted that he would win the war in Afghanistan; remove the writ of the Islamic Emirate and replace it with a model democracy. Ten years have passed since then. The American governments under the presidency of G. Bush and B. Obama left no stone unturned to obtain their objectives in Afghanistan. But they are still to achieve their goals either in the military field or the civilian’s notwithstanding execution of various plans, deployment of 150,000 troops and utilization of the air force and the economic power despite that they have had the political support of the world. Neither they have been able to establish a credible regime in Afghanistan which enjoys a complete writ at least in the capital Kabul nor they are able to extend it a few kilometers from the proximity of the provincial centers.

As for the military front, so far various long- term and short-term strategies of the Americans have faced failure. Many military operations and endeavors launched by them have had no achievement, particularly, their efforts in the last two years achieved no tangible results, though they were focused on regaining the lost areas, protecting populated areas and turning the tide of the battle. They had announced the current spring as a parameter for the display of their success. But, in comparison to the previous springs, Mujahideen carried out successful operations this spring. Another conspiracy of the enemy to form militias also faced frustration at the country level except in a few localities. As to the civilian sector, the Kabul sitting Administration suffices to be produced as an evidence for the failures of the Americans in this sector. The Administrations is now reputed all over the world for rampant corruption, internal squabbling, recrimination and crisis. Though it is projected as an achievement of democracy framed and formed by the Americans, but the Kabul Administration is grappling with queer problems which have no precedence in the history of Afghanistan and the world. The Government apparatus is entangled in squabbling over the insoluble issue of dispensation of privileges.

The outcome of the elections which were held almost a year ago, is hanging in the air. Key figures of the government are fleeing abroad after committing embezzlement and corruptions and announce their resignation from there. International observers believe that the Americans are facing despondency and frustration because of the failure of their political project. They would have continued their military operations, if they were certain that they would be able to bring about an acceptable Administration. But the past decade showed that the enemy is completely disappointed about the non-availability of an efficient Administration and do not aspire to have one in future. This is why they want to end the war. It is worth mentioning that dissemination of foreign culture and eradication of local culture and religious values is one of the main goals of invasions. The Americans have made great endeavors in this sector. They have established various audio and video outlets and succeeded to an extent to influence the minds of the Afghan youths. But generally speaking, the Afghans are committed to their beliefs and religious values. They are still dedicated to their religion, country and culture and look on the Americans as invaders.

In view of the above reality, The Almighty Allah has slapped failure and humiliation on the Americans and their Allies in their every colonialist plan and program, phase by phase, whether it is the military front or political or some other sectors. Predictably, they will not have any advancement in the said fields in future as well. Therefore, it is rational for them to pave the way for the withdrawal of their troops from Afghanistan like the Russian invaders did previously, being empty-handed and handicapped.

Afghan Taliban Shot Down Nato Military Helicopter

KABUL: A Nato helicopter crashed Thursday in eastern Afghanistan but no one was hurt, the US-led coalition said.
The crew was recovered after the crash, which occurred in Parwan province. Nato said the cause of the incident was under investigation.
The Taliban claimed its fighters shot down the aircraft, but the coalition said that initial reports indicated no militant activity in the area.
Also in the east, villagers protested the deaths of civilians in a coalition airstrike earlier this week in Khost province.
The civilians were killed Tuesday during a fight between insurgents and an Afghan-led security force, which was searching for a leader of the Haqqani network, a militant group affiliated with the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
A coalition helicopter was called to support ground troops, who were being hit with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire. The coalition said the helicopter killed several of the insurgents and unintentionally, some members of the insurgents’ families who were living with the fighters.
Gen. Raz Mohammad Oryakhail, an Afghan army commander in Khost, said 13 people including the Haqqani leader, six of his fighters and members of their families were killed in the strike in Shamul district.

In fact, Washington wants Pakistan Army to target the Haqqani network which consists of pro-Pakistan patriotic tribes in order to engage Pakistan Army in a civil war in this region to soften things up for a “humanitarian” invasion by the NWO vultures. North Waziristan, the most hyped of seven tribal districts on the Afghan border by the Zionist mainstream media, is a stronghold of the Haqqanis, who are rubbishly linked to AL-CIA-DA by the Zionist mainstream media to justify their propaganda in front of their illiterate audience. However, Pakistan has resisted USZ pressure to launch a sweeping offensive in the area. Witnesses said Wednesday’s clashes broke out after troops started to blow up a private hospital used by the CIA-RAW backed TTP terrorists, one day after a nearby bomb attack killed three troops and wounded another 15. It should be kept very clear at this point that the Haqqanis have never attacked Pakistan Army or any other Pakistani assets in their history in fact they fought shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan Army in every battle that it has fought so far against enemies of Pakistan. One local resident said he saw two gunship helicopters shelling an abandoned government school, where TTP terrorists were holed up, targeting soldiers. Another witness said TTP terrorists fired on a helicopter from a roof top in the main market, where traders were trapped by the fighting and locals said they feared civilian casualties.

Authorities ordered an indefinite curfew and told residents to stay at home, in announcements made throughout the afternoon by loudspeaker on mosques as the clashes, at times heavy, continued into a fifth hour. In one street, a witness said he saw six TTP terrorists fire on troops and saw one fighter being shot and killed. Pakistan has been long pressured by the international humanitarian circus clowns including USZ, NATO, France, Italy and UK to do more in the region, and of course, without highlighting the deception created by TTP whose only aim is to somehow spark a fight between Pakistan Army and the Haqqanis in the region in order to weaken both the Haqqanis and the Army to facilitate the cult of "humanitarian" terrorists in yet another "humanitarian" invasion into Pakistan under the fake pretext of "safeguarding Pakistan's Nukes" when at the same time American nukes are the most unsafe at this point in time.

The previously scheduled NATO-Russia Council meeting in the Black Sea city of Sochi was joined at the last minute by South African President Jacob Zuma but his presence did not appear to help bring the sides any closer. "So far, there is no common understanding over how the resolution is being implemented", Lavrov said, referring to the UN Security Council resolution that paved the way for the air campaign. "We want this resolution to be fulfilled literally, without expanding its interpretation". Lavrov and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev earlier held talks with Rasmussen in Sochi in a bid to overcome their differences and find a peaceful solution to the Libya crisis.

They were also joined by Zuma who earlier had a bilateral meeting with Medvedev and like Russia is pushing for a peaceful solution to the conflict. Russia abstained in the resolution vote at the Security Council but has since expressed growing anger over the duration and intensity of the NATO-led air strikes against targets of Moamer Gaddafi's Libyan regime. "We consider the arms embargo (under the UN Security Council resolution) to be unambiguous", said Lavrov. "Any weapons deliveries are a violation of the resolution", he added.

Meanwhile, the Libyan government said on Monday that it was in talks with opposition figures but there seemed little chance of a swift end to the civil war as both sides stuck to entrenched positions on the fate of Muammar Gaddafi. Fox “News”14 Propaganda techniques to brainwash the world

There is nothing more diabolic than a press outlet which claims to be "free" but is vice versa. Access to comprehensive, accurate and quality information is essential to the manifestation of Socratic citizenship – the society characterized by a civically engaged, well-informed and socially invested populace. Thus, to the degree that access to quality information is willfully or unintentionally obstructed, there is no “democracy” so to speak in America.

It is ironic that in the era of 24-hour cable news networks and “reality” programming, the news-to-fluff ratio and overall veracity of information has declined precipitously. Take the fact Americans now spend on average about 50 hours a week using various forms of media, while at the same time cultural literacy levels hover just above the gutter. Not only does mainstream media now tolerate gross misrepresentations of fact and history by public figures (highlighted most recently by Sarah Palin’s ludicrous depiction of Paul Revere’s ride), but many media actually legitimize these displays. Pause for a moment and ask yourself what it means that the world’s largest, most profitable and most popular news channel passes off as fact every whim, impulse and outrageously incompetent analysis of its so-called reporters. How did we get here? Take the enormous amount of misinformation that is taken for truth by Fox audiences: the belief that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and that he was in on 9/11, the belief that climate change isn’t real and/or man-made, the belief that Barack Obama is Muslim and wasn’t born in the United States, the insistence that all Arabs are Muslim and all Muslims are terrorists, the inexplicable perceptions that immigrants are both too lazy to work and are about to steal your job. All of these claims are demonstrably false, yet Fox News viewers will maintain their veracity with incredible zeal. Why? Is it simply that we have lost our respect for knowledge?

My curiosity about this question compelled me to sit down and document the most oft-used methods by which willful ignorance has been turned into dogma by Fox News and other propagandists disguised as media. The techniques I identify here also help to explain the simultaneously powerful identification the Fox media audience has with the network, as well as their ardent, reflexive defenses of it. The good news is that the more conscious you are of these techniques, the less likely they are to work on you. The bad news is that those reading this article are probably the least in need in of it.

1. Panic Mongering
This goes one step beyond simple fear mongering. With panic mongering, there is never a break from the fear. The idea is to terrify and terrorize the audience during every waking moment. From Muslims to swine flu to recession to homosexuals to immigrants to the rapture itself, the belief over at Fox seems to be that if your fight-or-flight reflexes aren’t activated, you aren’t alive. This of course raises the question: why terrorize your own audience? Because it is the fastest way to bypass the rational brain. In other words, when people are afraid, they don’t think rationally. And when they can’t think rationally, they’ll believe anything.

2. Character Assassination/Ad Hominem
Fox does not like to waste time debating the idea. Instead, they prefer a quicker route to dispensing with their opponents: go after the person’s credibility, motives, intelligence, character, or, if necessary, sanity. No category of character assassination is off the table and no offense is beneath them. Fox and like-minded media figures also use ad hominem attacks not just against individuals, but entire categories of people in an effort to discredit the ideas of every person who is seen to fall into that category, e.g. “liberals,” “hippies,” “progressives” etc. This form of argument – if it can be called that – leaves no room for genuine debate over ideas, so by definition, it is not only “undemocratic” but in fact just plain crass.

3. Projection/Flipping
This one is frustrating for the viewer who is trying to actually follow the argument. It involves taking whatever underhanded tactic you’re using and then accusing your opponent of doing it to you first. We see this frequently in the immigration discussion, where anti-racists are accused of racism, or in the climate change debate, where those who argue for human causes of the phenomenon are accused of not having science or facts on their side. It’s often called upon when the media host finds themselves on the ropes in the debate.

4. Rewriting History
This is another way of saying that propagandists make the facts fit their worldview. The Downing Street Memos on the Iraq war were a classic example of this on a massive scale, but it happens daily and over smaller issues as well. A recent case in point is Palin’s mangling of the Paul Revere ride, which Fox reporters have bent over backward to validate. Why lie about the historical facts, even when they can be demonstrated to be false? Well, because dogmatic minds actually find it easier to reject reality than to update their viewpoints. They will literally rewrite history if it serves their interests. And they’ll often speak with such authority that the casual viewer will be tempted to question what they knew as fact.

5. Scapegoating/Othering
This works best when people feel insecure or scared. It’s technically a form of both fear mongering and diversion, but it is so pervasive that it deserves its own category. The simple idea is that if you can find a group to blame for social or economic problems, you can then go on to a) justify violence/dehumanization of them, and b) subvert responsibility for any harm that may befall them as a result.

6. Conflating Violence With Power and Opposition to Violence With Weakness
This is more of what I’d call a “meta-frame” (a deeply held belief) than a media technique, but it is manifested in the ways news is reported constantly. For example, terms like “show of strength” are often used to describe acts of repression, such as those by the Iranian regime against the protesters in the summer of 2009. There are several concerning consequences of this form of conflation. First, it has the potential to make people feel falsely emboldened by shows of force – it can turn wars into sporting events. Secondly, especially in the context of American politics, displays of violence – whether manifested in war or debates about the Second Amendment – are seen as noble and (in an especially surreal irony) moral. Violence become synonymous with power, patriotism and piety.

7. Bullying
This is a favorite technique of several Fox commentators. That it continues to be employed demonstrates that it seems to have some efficacy. Bullying and yelling works best on people who come to the conversation with a lack of confidence, either in themselves or their grasp of the subject being discussed. The bully exploits this lack of confidence by berating the guest into submission or compliance. Often, less self-possessed people will feel shame and anxiety when being berated and the quickest way to end the immediate discomfort is to cede authority to the bully. The bully is then able to interpret that as a “win.”

8. Confusion
As with the preceding technique, this one works best on an audience that is less confident and self-possessed. The idea is to deliberately confuse the argument, but insist that the logic is airtight and imply that anyone who disagrees is either too dumb or too fanatical to follow along. Less independent minds will interpret the confusion technique as a form of sophisticated thinking, thereby giving the user’s claims veracity in the viewer’s mind.

9. Populism
This is especially popular in election years. The speakers identifies themselves as one of “the people” and the target of their ire as an enemy of the people. The opponent is always “elitist” or a “bureaucrat” or a “government insider” or some other category that is not the people. The idea is to make the opponent harder to relate to and harder to empathize with. It often goes hand in hand with scapegoating. A common logical fallacy with populism bias when used by the right is that accused “elitists” are almost always liberals – a category of political actors who, by definition, advocate for non-elite groups.

10. Invoking the Christian God
This is similar to othering and populism. With morality politics, the idea is to declare yourself and your allies as patriots, Christians and “real Americans” (those are inseparable categories in this line of thinking) and anyone who challenges them as not. Basically, God loves Fox and Republicans and America. And hates taxes and anyone who doesn’t love those other three things. Because the speaker has been benedicted by God to speak on behalf of all Americans, any challenge is perceived as immoral. It’s a cheap and easy technique used by all totalitarian entities from states to cults.

11. Saturation
There are three components to effective saturation: being repetitive, being ubiquitous and being consistent. The message must be repeated over and over, it must be everywhere and it must be shared across commentators: e.g. “Saddam has WMD.” Veracity and hard data have no relationship to the efficacy of saturation. There is a psychological effect of being exposed to the same message over and over, regardless of whether it’s true or if it even makes sense, e.g., “Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States.” If something is said enough times, by enough people, many will come to accept it as truth. Another example is Fox’s own slogan of “Fair and Balanced.”

12. Disparaging Education
There is an emerging and disturbing lack of reverence for education and intellectualism in many mainstream media discourses. In fact, in some circles (e.g. Fox), higher education is often disparaged as elitist. Having a university credential is perceived by these folks as not a sign of credibility, but of a lack of it. In fact, among some commentators, evidence of intellectual prowess is treated snidely and as anti-American. The disdain for education and other evidence of being trained in critical thinking are direct threats to a hive-mind mentality, which is why they are so viscerally demeaned.

13. Guilt by Association
This is a favorite of Glenn Beck and Andrew Breitbart, both of whom have used it to decimate the careers and lives of many good people. Here’s how it works: if your cousin’s college roommate’s uncle’s ex-wife attended a dinner party back in 1984 with Gorbachev’s niece’s ex-boyfriend’s sister, then you, by extension are a communist set on destroying America. Period.

14. Diversion
This is where, when on the ropes, the media commentator suddenly takes the debate in a weird but predictable direction to avoid accountability. This is the point in the discussion where most Fox anchors start comparing the opponent to Saul Alinsky or invoking ACORN or Media Matters, in a desperate attempt to win through guilt by association. Or they’ll talk about wanting to focus on “moving forward,” as though by analyzing the current state of things or God forbid, how we got to this state of things, you have no regard for the future. Any attempt to bring the discussion back to the issue at hand will likely be called deflection, an ironic use of the technique of projection/flipping.

In debating some of these tactics with colleagues and friends, I have also noticed that the Fox viewership seems to be marked by a sort of collective personality disorder whereby the viewer feels almost as though they’ve been let into a secret society. Something about their affiliation with the network makes them feel privileged and this affinity is likely what drives the viewers to defend the network so vehemently. They seem to identify with it at a core level, because it tells them they are special and privy to something the rest of us don’t have. It’s akin to the loyalty one feels by being let into a private club or a gang. That effect is also likely to make the propaganda more powerful, because it goes mostly unquestioned.

In considering these tactics and their possible effects on American public discourse, it is important to note that historically, those who’ve genuinely accessed truth have never berated those who did not. You don’t get honored by history when you beat up your opponent: look at Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln. These men did not find the need to engage in othering, ad homeinum attacks, guilt by association or bullying. This is because when a person has accessed a truth, they are not threatened by the opposing views of others. This reality reveals the righteous indignation of people like Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity as a symptom of untruth. These individuals are hostile and angry precisely because they don’t feel confident in their own veracity. And in general, the more someone is losing their temper in a debate and the more intolerant they are of listening to others, the more you can be certain they do not know what they’re talking about.

One final observation. Fox audiences, birthers and Tea Partiers often defend their arguments by pointing to the fact that a lot of people share the same perceptions. This is a reasonable point to the extent that Murdoch’s News Corporation reaches a far larger audience than any other single media outlet. But, the fact that a lot of people believe something is not necessarily a sign that it’s true; it’s just a sign that it’s been effectively marketed.

Being a Muslim and Pakistan, we believe firmly in two-nation theory and there is no doubt about it.

But many of us don’t know its historic background and Islamic significance and hence fell prey to the enemy propaganda about the so-called Peace by the corrupt and sold-out media outlet.

We all know what happened before Ghazwa-e-Khyber, if you don’t remember, let me recall it for you!

The Muslims of Madina had signed peace pacts with the jews settled over there, Jews never accepted Muslims, they plotted against Islam time and again and in the battle of Khandaq, joined hands with Quraysh breaking the peace pact. Once the Muslims won that battle, they expelled all jews from Madina. The jews escorted to Khayber, and still plotted against Muslims. In the end, the muslims were compelled to besiege the fortified city of Khayber and were victorious with the grace of Allah.

Similarly, the muslims signed the treaty of Hudaibiyah with the kuffar of Makkah, but that was also not respected by them, and the Prophet (S.A.W.W) ordered the conquest of Makkah.

Hence, from both the historic revelations, we can easily conclude that the kuffar can never become the friends of Muslims, and extending the hand of friendship towards them is just foolishness!

It is clearly written in Quran that:

“O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.” [Quran 5:51]

Now let us go into the recent past, what the creators of Pakistan believed!

This is recorded in the pages of history, after the Lukhnow Pact, Qauid-e-Azam was given the title of “Ambassador of Hindu-Muslim Unity”

It should be noted here that in those days, the great Quaid used to think the muslims and hindus can be friends, but once he was betrayed by the crooks hindu leader Nehru, he was so much disappointed that he decided to leave politics. This was the turning point of the life of our great Quaid, Allama Iqbal (R.A) assisted him and gave him spiritual influence and made him believe that muslims cannot afford to lose a leader of his caliber. This was the time when Quiad-e-Azam came to know that Hindu were not worth trusting, and hence the muslims had no other choice but to carve out a separate homeland in this region.

The two-nation theory states that Muslims and People of other religion are two different entities and they can never live together or become allies.

In our previous article about Aman Ki Asha , we mentioned some atrocities in the pre-partition time in which millions of muslims were martyred. According to an estimate, about 5 million muslims were slaughtered during the partition. The cries of our mothers and brothers still reverberate in our ears.

But the enmity and hostility of Hindus with Muslims will never end. The history is witness that India has never let go a single opportunity to damage and harm Pakistan,. And even in future, they will not miss any chance of doing so!

India is still violating many treaties, the best example that can be quoted here is that of the Indus Water Treaty that was signed in 1960 about the distribution of water between the two countries and it has waged a Hydrological war against Pakistan to create artificial famine and floods.

In such situation, when the enemy has loaded all its weapons to destroy country, would any sane person extend a hand of friendship towards such enemy? Would any patriot forget all the martyrs and the blood that they have shed for the only reason that we are muslims and Pakistan?

NO! we will not forget a single martyr, we will not forget what happened on 16^th August 1946 in Calcutta! We will not forget a single Kashmiri, Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi, Pashtoon and Bengali brother and sister who have sacrificed themselves for the sake of this land of pure, for the sake of this sabz hilali, for the sake of sabz gumbad!

We will not forget a single martyr of our beloved Army who have sacrificed themselves for keeping this sabz hilali.

The end game in Afghanistan has begun. Proxies are taking up positions on both sides of the border–testing the waters and attempting to stake out the territory. Events point to the future after the US leaves. It will leave a contingent of Afghans that are beholden to the West. Those Afghan will die for no reason at all–cannon fodder for the empire that refuses to call itself an empire.

Press reports have Pakistani officials indirectly blaming Delhi for the cross-border raids from Afghanistan.
Apparently a ‘game’ was being played at the behest of some regional stakeholders who were averse to Pakistan-Afghan rapprochement.
During a recent operation against militants, the army seized a large quantity of Indian, American, Russian and Chinese weapons and ammunition.

Pakistani officials said there was no doubt that they had tacit support of regional leaders and some elements within the Afghan government.
“There could be no other explanation for groups of 200-300 militants moving in Kunar to launch attacks on Pakistani posts. They have a continuous supply line of arms and finances in addition to logistical support.”

There have been five major raids by militants based in eastern Afghanistan. The militants, many of whom had fled operations in Bajaur, Mohmand and Swat, are occupying an area between River Kunar and the border because of a void created by withdrawal of Isaf forces from the area.
“They attack the Pakistani areas to regain the territory lost because of army operations,” a military official said. Pakistan has protested over militant attacks with the Afghan government, Isaf and ANA.Afghan National Army

Delhi is openly supporting the terrorists. Iran is supporting factions. Pakistan is building up alliances. China is investing. Russia is taking stock and the frmer Turkish states of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are scared. As the US begins to retreat from Afghanistan, it will begin to sugar coat the defeat with spectacular raids, and high-profile acts which will hide the pain felt by the NATO forces.
One such event is the vacation of areas along the Pakistani border. THe (ANA) has not taken up the area and the US forces have withdrawn. Bharati sponsored froces call the Tehrik e Taliban (TTP) are being brought into this area to attack Pakistan from Afghanistan.
Islamabad has repeatedly asked the ISAF and ANA forces to clean up the cesspool. Because the ANA has failed to clear up the area, the Pakistan Army had to do it itself. The sanitization is in progress.
Belatedly the Army did admit that it had conducted operations to clear the area. Pakistan army had earlier this week said that the mortar rounds could have “accidentally crossed the border” and denied that the shelling was intentional. With the Afghan National Army (ANA) with its embedded US advisors fired rounds into Pakistani territory too.
According to press reports, the Pakistani military commanders say the root of the problem lies in Afghanistan where militants have sanctuaries in areas bordering Pakistan from where they “launch attacks on our posts”.
Military officials say when Pakistani forces retaliate against the militant attacks some rounds possibly land in Afghan territory.
“We have told ISAF and the ANA about the presence of Swati Taliban and militants led by Faqir Mohammad (Bajaur) and Abdul Wali (Mohmand),” a military official said, adding no action was being taken against their sanctuaries.
Another official said there was no doubt that they had tacit support of regional leaders and some elements within the Afghan government.
The US is scrambling to find other routes to get its supplies to Afghanistan. It is stubbornly refusing to defend the indefensible—the refusal to vacate the Shamsi airbase, ostensibly on the pretext that they rented it from the UAE. The Emirates were apparently using it for falconry and then leased it to the Americans. Pakistan has halted food and water supplies to the base, and the US is not flying drones of the base, at least temporarily.

Pakistan Defence Minister Mukhtar Ahmad’s comments this week that the government had ended U.S. drone flights out of Shamsi air base deep in southwest Baluchistan province has injected new controversy in their troubled relationship.
Washington’s dismissal of the Pakistan government’s stand is quite extraordinary.
Can a country, even if it is the world’s strongest power, continue to use an air base despite the the refusal of the host country ?

US President Barack Obama has announced steps for a phased pullout of 100,000 troops from Afghanistan to end a costly war launched after the September 11, 2001, attacks and switch the focus to the troubled economy.
But the Afghan Taliban, resurgent a decade after being toppled from power, dismissed Obama’s announcement as symbolic and said only a full, immediate withdrawal of foreign forces could stop “pointless bloodshed.” They rejected any suggestion of U.S. gains against the insurgents.
Reports and selective leaks from the US media also imply that the US had started to directly talk with the Taliban while excluding Pakistan from these talks.
Pakistan is America’s supposed regional ally, as well as Afghanistan’s largest neighbour which has suffered directly due to cross border infiltration of militants from Afghanistan into its territory. Nearly 40,000 civilians and aroud 4,000 soldiers and paramilitary forces have been killed in terror attacks in Pakistan in the last few years and Pakistan’s economy is said to have suffered to the tune of around 60 billion dollars in the last decade since the American invasion of Afghanistan.
The Taliban, or the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan as they call themselves, for their part dismissed the American hype over direct talks by striking the fortress-like Intercontinental Hotel within the heart of Kabul’s secure zone, humiliating US and NATO claims of having weakened them. The attack occurred hours before a scheduled conference, backed by the US, on transition plans for the country.
The Taliban in recent years have demonstrated a startling determination to repeatedly expose the weaknesses and humiliate the US led coalition forces, particularly after each public claim by the United States to have gained an upper hand in controlling the insurgency.
“Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan once again wants to make it clear that the solution for the Afghan crisis lies in the full withdrawal of all foreign troops immediately and (while) this does not happen, our armed struggle will increase from day to day,” said a Taliban spokesman in a statement to the media.
Any U.S. suggestion, they said, of “making headway in Afghanistan and Obama’s proclamation of them being in a stronger position are nothing more than baseless claims and propaganda.”
From absolute certainty, to absolute embarassment
When the US invaded Afghanistan weeks after the 9/11 attacks in New York, two things seeemed absolutely certain to international observers and US military planners. First being that the Taliban are barbaric killers and terrorists with whom the US would never negotiate – and the second being that America and its allies will gain a swift victory after annihilating the Taliban within weeks.
Ten years later and with millions killed and billions spent, reality must feel like a slap in the face for President Obama and his military advisers. Not only are the Taliban in ascendancy and in control of over 70% of the Afghan territory, they also have the US on its knees begging the Taliban to enter negotiations for a face-saving safe exit.
In most military conflicts the first side to offer terms for negotiation is usually the one that has unexpectedly taken a beating so severe that it feels it cannot carry on with the status quo. Those in control of the war and expecting big gains in the near future have no reason to negotiate with the enemy.
Searching for a swift victory the US today faces absolute defeat in a long drawn out, expensive and messy war. US officials claim almost every week, proudly, that the US is talking directly to the Taliban. Their claims are almost always followed by a swift Taliban rebuttal and often a deadly attack on US and NATO forces, as if to drive home a point.
Hamid Karzai, CIA’s puppet in Kabul implanted by Washington too seems to be itching to switch sides. Openly criticizing the US military actions in his country, he has started tapping into the terminology usually associated with the Taliban, by calling for ‘American invaders’ to behave. ‘Behave’, not ‘leave’ however, as he believs his fate may not be too different to that of Najibullah, the Soviet puppet who was dragged to his death behind a truck in the streets of Kabul after his capture at the hands of the Taliban from a UN compound. Najibullah’s bloodied body was later hung publicly in Aryana Square.
Economic Collapse – Shades of USSR?
Back home in Washington, the US stands on the verge of bankruptcy. TIME Magazine reported last month that a panel of academics experienced in war accounting says the 1 Trillion figure released by the Pentagon last month is just a down payment — and that War on Terror’s real, total cost is around $5 trillion.
Five trillion dollars: that’s $16,000 per American; $64,000 for a family of four.
The final official tally of the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan will reach at least $3.7 trillion, and could go as high as $4.4 trillion, according to a study done by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies.
“Our estimate is larger because we include more than the direct Pentagon appropriation for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the larger global war on terror; wars always cost more than what the Pentagon spends for the duration of the combat operation,” the report says.
The study’s estimate of $4 trillion also includes items not counted by the Pentagon, including homeland security, veterans care and various developmental efforts. Then there is the additional $1 trillion in interest payments on the war debt. Many international ecnonomists and observers have predicted the collapse of the US economy within months, some even arguing that the country stands bankrupt as of today.
The reluctance of Obama to pull troops out without a negotiated settlement with the Afghans is purely to save face internationally and avoid the humiliation that a defeat in decade long war that has bankrupted the US economy, will bring. Coupled with economic collapse, an American pullout from Afghanistan that excludes any hint of a ‘gain’ for the Americans, will spell the death of America as we know it.
The Afghan terrain has throughout history been a maze for foreign invaders. Every promising opening for the invaders bring them to a dead end. Every corner is a false hope. The only way out of this maze – as the Soviets, the British, and many others before them have found out – is the realization that there is no way out.

American President Barack Obama, who had given hope to his nation of withdrawing troops from the exhaustive Afghan war one and half year earlier, finally announced that 10,000 soldiers will be withdrawn by the end of this year. Barack Obama made his announcement of withdrawing 10,000 troops in the whole year at a time when the American nation’s hatred for this war has reached a tipping point. A recent poll suggested that most Americans want to bring the occupation of Afghanistan to an end as quickly as possible and want all American soldiers to be removed from this futile war.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan considers this announcement which currently withdraws 10,000 soldiers this year, only as a symbolic step which will never satisfy the war weary international community or the American people because it comes as America simultaneously wants to build permanent bases in Afghanistan under the title of “Strategic Agreement” by forcing its stooge regime to sign and approve it while it is at the same time busying its invading forces in killing and persecuting the Afghan people in all corners of Afghanistan.

Obama and his war mongers want to deceive their nation and with this announcement, while in reality, they have no respect for their nation’s demands or wanting to bring this war and occupation to an end nor do they want to fulfill their promise. Obama’s statement about training Afghan Police and Army holds no significance because firstly, the trainers themselves have failed in passing this exam and secondly, the Afghans see them as thieves and enemies of their nation and religion. On top of this, the so called Army and Police, most of whom are drug addicts, forced out of their homes, the filth and bad people of society have been gathered for vice, given the mentality to spread vice and assigned for corruption will not reach Afghans any benefit nor will they help the Pentagon or CIA reach their ambitions. The American nation must realize that their politicians and Army Generals are prolonging their game with them which was started a couple of years earlier. They are repeatedly giving false hopes to its nation about ending this war and claiming baselessly about victory and in this way want to extend this war as long as possible.

It must be clarified that the assertion of American leaders about making headway in Afghanistan and Obama’s proclamation of them being in a stronger position are nothing more than baseless claims and propaganda. They have not gained progress in the battle field nor can they bring forth any proofs of this progress. The increase in troop levels since last year has only increased the loss in life and equipment on their side. And in this way, the increased blind bombings of villages, genocide, persecution of people and the destruction of people’s homes and farms to protect themselves cannot be called victory or progress by any sound mind.

The American people, who have now understood many of the realities about the Afghan war, must take serious steps to stop this pointless bloodshed. The American taxpayers must realize that, like the previous ten years, their money is still being wasted on this pointless and meaningless war or is still going to the pockets of the officials in the corrupt Kabul regime. If they do not react now, they will definitely be forced to do so in the future in order to release themselves from this crisis.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan once again wants to make it clear that the solution for the Afghan crisis lies in the full withdrawal of all foreign troops immediately and until this does not happen, our armed struggle will increase from day to day. In Afghanistan, region, American and the rest of the world, hatred will only increase against all invading troops and will end up in the disgraceful defeat of the invading troops, God willing.

Iran plans to test-fire new “supersonic surface-to-sea missiles” as part of its war games in the Persian Gulf in the coming days, says a senior Iranian military commander.

Commander of the Aerospace Division of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said that the new missiles have been designed to target ships and forces at sea, IRIB reported Sunday.

“Last year, we achieved (the technology of) new anti-ship missiles that can hit targets with multiple speed of sound,” he went on to say.

Hajizadeh added that the upgraded missiles will soon be used in the naval phase of the IRGC's Great Prophet 6 missile drills in the Persian Gulf.

On Saturday, the top Iranian military commander pointed out that the ongoing drills are entering the naval or second phase of the maneuvers.

“From the middle of the week the second phase of the drills will continue with the launching of naval exercises and the use of surface-to-sea missiles,” he further explained.

IRGC started the 10-day Great Prophet 6 drills on June 27 and unveiled underground silos meant to protect the country's missiles and fired Fateh (Conqueror) 110 medium-range ballistic missiles, which have been fitted with improved precision targeting.

On the second day of the exercises, the Iranian military successfully launched 14 surface-to-surface missiles.

On the third day of the drills, Iran's Armed Forces were equipped with the Ghadir radar system, which can monitor a radius of 1,100 and a height of 300 kilometers.

The mass pro-Gaddafi street demonstration of one million Libyans held in the capital Tripoli has gone unreported by Western media as has news of civilians killed for the past three months. Press TV talks with Lizzie Phelan, journalist and political activist in London who has been to Libya and says that Western media is complicit in war crimes in the North African country through omission of fact and that the vast majority of the population are in support of the Libyan government. Following is a transcript of the interview.

Press TV: NATO have issued an apology for a strike so about this publicized NATO strike that has killed civilians, they have blamed 'technical error'. The conclusion we can draw from that is if that happens it may happen again, which relates to the risk of more civilian casualties. Concerning this air campaign - Do you think it has actually gone too far when it is not saving lives?

Phelan: Yet again we are seeing what the USZ and Europe shamefully call collateral damage in the form of human lives like we have seen previously in Iraq and Afghanistan and in many other parts of the world.

This apology by NATO is an absolute joke. It's the first apology we've had from them in the three months despite the fact that civilians have been dying at the hands of NATO air strikes everyday in the past three months there have been thousands of strikes on the country so they made the apology yesterday on Sunday. But again at 2am in the morning there was another attack on the city of Sorman, 130km west of Tripoli where a further fifteen civilians were killed and a further three children were killed.

In previous weeks we have seen the bombing of al-Nasr university in Tripoli in the daytime where civilians were killed and so these are the military targets that we're seeing them bomb - we're seeing them bomb universities; we're seeing them bomb Friday market street in Tripoli where there is no military site in the area. Friday market street - I've been there - it begins with a GPO post office and ends with a primary school and they bombed four buildings and killed nine civilians including a toddler of four months old.

So, we are seeing what 'humanitarian intervention' and the 'protection of civilians' al-a-NATO means - it means the killing of children as we are seeing.

The real crime here is the crime of the media. Where has the media been? The media has picked up on this now because NATO has made their apology, but we've been seeing civilians dying every day for the past three months; we have a swarm of western journalists based in Tripoli...

Press TV: The NATO apology concerns it's responsibility for the deaths of 9 civilians and 18 injured in an early morning strike at an apartment building. In terms of what NATO is exercising it does put into question the goals of what NATO has on the ground... and this comes when there are CIA officers and covert operators as has been reported that are on the ground in touch with the revolutionaries.

Phelan: I wouldn't call anybody who is inviting NATO or the CIA or intelligence services into their country revolutionaries, they are in fact counter-revolutionaries.

The purpose is clear and that is to curb the Arab spring, but it goes back further than that since the revolution (military coup) of 1969-70, when Gaddafi kicked out the British and the Americans and closed their military bases and nationalized the oil. The West has had an agenda since then to get back into Libya and take complete control of the oil resources. Yes they've had a period of reproachment with Libya whereby they have been able to make some good deals with Libya, but they haven't had any where near the kind of control that they would like to have - like they have in Saudi Arabia or Qatar or the other Gulf states where these are effectively client regimes.

So the agenda is clear to completely violate international law and assassinate Gaddafi against the will of the Libyan people without actually every asking them what the Libyan people want.

Press TV: Since you have visited Libya, what is the support that Muammar Gaddafi has and what is going on in terms of the tribal allegiance that exists there? Because as we understand there has been a split along traditional tribal lines - animosity has existed; and also based on some research done this has indeed been funded by the West.

Phelan: Exactly. Just on Friday there was a complete blackout in the media except for one CNN report about a march of one million Libyans in a country of six million people in Tripoli towards Green Square in support of the government and also in support of the people of Benghazi and Misrata who are being harassed and persecuted by what I call counter-revolutionaries, which is what others call rebels - in particular black Libyans who because of the really shameful story that al-Jazeera has pumped out about Gaddafi hiring African mercenaries, black Libyans in places like Misrata and Benghazi - I've met refugees from these areas who are victims of these atrocities - black Libyans being lynched publicly and the most unspeakable atrocities are being committed against them by pro-NATO counter revolutionaries.

In terms of the tribes in Libya - from my sources I have information that 90% of the tribes in Libya are supportive of the government including the largest tribe in Libya.

Of course, before the uprising there were frustrations In Libya as there are within every singly country, but the Libyan people are an extremely non-confrontational people that will go to the ends of the earth to resolve in a non-confrontational way.

And that is also reflected in the government in the way in which the government has tried over the decades and bent backwards to accommodate opposition forces within the government, which in a sense has backfired as we saw from the people who defected from the government and who sold out because they were in the pockets of the CIA andMI6 and the other Western intelligence services.

So, from my experience in Libya the support for the government is absolutely widespread. There was a Guardian journalist in Libya who thankfully was deported from Libya for reporting that the reason why there is no opposition in Tripoli is because there are informers everywhere. A million people marched through the streets of Tripoli so the people have spoken for themselves.

Press TV: When will a political solution be discussed? Is NATO going to be ready to face the fact that there has to be a political solution in Libya? Many officials in the USZ have talked about having a political solution in Afghanistan and have conceded that for any war this is the best way forward...So why is this (military bombing) continuing in Libya?

Phelan: I have no faith in NATO to ever have the humility to suggest that what is needed and what was needed from the outset is a political solution.

It's clear that NATO have no way at the moment to get out. They have gone into this war and they can't lose face now.

I want to quickly mention something that has not been or rarely gets mentioned and that is the sanctions imposed on Libya have led now to a crisis in the country whereby people have to queue for six days for food and fuel and we've seen the impact from that in Iraq; sanctions are one of the greatest killers, sometimes more so than outright military war; it killed millions of people in Iraq.

Coming back to your question, I would say that the UN has been acting as an extension of NATO and has done so in Libya.

Press TV: I have said that NATO is the armed wing of the UN in which the UN is used and then of course NATO comes in and of course we see how that gets exercised when it comes to various countries.

Phelan: I would say it the other way round that the UN is essentially a wing of NATO in the sense that it gives legitimacy to what NATO's agenda is. And I have no faith in either of these institutions to deliver any kind of political solution in the country. The UN has proved itself a failure since the war on terror began and even before then.

In his majestic poem “Recessional,” Rudyard Kipling was writing of the fading British Empire, but his words are as vivid and pertinent today as a century ago:
“Far-called our navies melt away –
On dune and headland sinks the fire –
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!”

The objective of war is to achieve political objectives, not to kill enemies. Politically, the United States has achieved nothing in Afghanistan after 10 years of desultory, destruction, and titanic expenditure.

So in this sense, the US has already lost the Afghan conflict, its longest war. Militarily its forces have been stalemated, meaning that it has lost the all-important military initiative and is now on the strategic defensive. We have seen this before – in Vietnam.
Once more, Afghanistan fulfills its grim title as “graveyard of empires.”
The US has failed to install an obedient regime in Kabul that controls Afghanistan. It has made bitter foes of the nation’s Pashtun majority, and, in pursuing this war, gravely undermined Pakistan. Claims that US forces were only in Afghanistan to hunt the late Osama Bin Laden were widely disbelieved.
Near the end of June, President Barack Obama bowed to public opinion, approaching elections, military reality and financial woes by announcing he would withdraw a third of the 100,000 US troops from Afghanistan by the end of next summer. Pentagon brass growled open opposition. Mr. Obama should have smacked them down, but did not, adding to the growing belief that he is weak and overawed by the military chiefs.
US allies France and Germany announced similar troop reductions. All foreign troops are supposed to quit Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
This staggered withdrawal will take the US garrison roughly back to the size it was before President Obama sent 30,000 reinforcements to Afghanistan. This means enough soldiers to hold the main urban centers and connecting roads, but not enough to defeat Taliban guerillas in the field, or to block the Afghan-Pakistan border.
Washington currently spends at least $10 billion monthly on the Afghan war, not counting “black” payments, CIA and NSA operations. The US has poured $18.8 billion in development aid into Afghanistan since 2001 with nothing to show for the effort. Pakistan has been given $20 billion to support the Afghan War. Each US soldier in Afghanistan costs $1 million per annum, not counting full support costs.
None of these costs is covered by taxes; all are piled onto the gargantuan national debt.
The US deficit is heading over $1.4 trillion. The national debt, when unfunded pensions and benefits are added, is likely $100 trillion, according to the chief of PIMCO, the world’s largest bond trader. This means America, top-heavy with unsustainable debt, risks capsizing financially.
Forty-four million Americans now receive food stamps; the national infrastructure of roads, airports, bridges and schools is crumbling from neglect. Unemployment, officially at 9.5 percent, is probably closer to 20 percent.
The cry is being heard: “Rebuild America, not Afghanistan.”
In spite of intense pro-war propaganda, over half of Americans now oppose the Afghan War. Even US-installed Afghan president calls it, “in Hamid Karzai effective, apart from causing civilian casualties.”
So will the US really pull out of Afghanistan? That remains to be seen. There are many contradictory signs.
Mid-level talks between the US and Taliban have been conducted for over a year. Washington’s plan was to try to split Taliban through such talks.
US Afghan supremo Gen. David Petraeus tried to buy off Afghan resistance in the same manner he had bribed Iraq’s Sunni tribes into quiescence. This gambit did not work with Taliban’s hardened warriors, for whom honor holds as much value as money.
The US will probably keep a sizeable number of its remaining 66,000 soldiers in Afghanistan after 2014, rebranding them training troops. The huge US bases at Kandahar and Bagram will be retained as permanent US fortified enclaves.
Billions more will be spent on the Afghan government army and police. They have so far proved ineffective because most are composed of Tajik and Uzbek mercenaries who are hated and distrusted by the Pashtun.
A similar process is underway in Iraq where “withdrawal” means keeping combat brigades in Iraq, renamed “training units” and “counter-terrorism units,” thousands of mercenaries, and mobile US combat forces in neighboring Kuwait and the Gulf.
New US embassies in Baghdad and Kabul – huge, fortified complexes with their own mercenary combat forces – will be the world’s biggest. Kabul will have a staff of 1,000 US personnel. Bin Laden called them “crusader fortresses.” Fortified US consulates are under construction in other parts of Afghanistan.
In addition, the US will still arm and finance allied Tajik and Uzbek militias in Afghanistan, and CIA-run mercenary forces. Financing Pakistan’s US-backed regimes and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan must also continue at around $3 billion yearly. What political concessions the US is giving Moscow to allow passage of war supplies through its territory remains a secret.
The US appears to be going and staying at the same time. By contrast, Taliban’s position is clear and simple: it will continue fighting until all foreign troops are withdrawn. US Special Forces, drones and hit squads have been unable to assassinate enough Taliban commanders to make the mujahidin stop fighting.
Americans never study history, not even their own. We don’t recall founding father, the great Benjamin Franklin, who said, “There is no good war, and no bad peace.” Or that the Pashtun Taliban and its allies are dedicated, undefeated warriors who fight where they live, and have all the time in the world.
I’ve been in combat with Pashtun fighters and remain in awe of their courage and love of combat. The Pashtun mujahidin will keep fighting as long as their ammunition lasts.
America, for all its B-1 heavy bombers, strike fighters, missiles, helicopter gunships and drones, armor, super electronics, spies in the sky and all the other high tech weapons of modern war has failed to defeat some 30,000 tribal fighters armed with nothing more than light weapons and legendary valor.
The US has lost the political war in Afghanistan. It may linger there, but it cannot win.

ISLAMABAD:The strategic dialogue between Pakistan and the United States is said to be postponed indefinitely, in the latest sign of worsening ties between the key war-on-terror allies.
Talks are reported to be delayed after the US refused to go ahead with the process until ongoing differences between the two countries are resolved,Sources told.
Tensions between Islamabad and Washington have been rising since May 2 when a US midnight raid in Abbottabad killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
During her trip to Pakistan after the Osama raid, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton indicated that the two countries would soon resume the strategic dialogue, but so far the two sides have failed to fix dates for the talks due to differences on certain issues.
“There is no chance of strategic dialogue taking place any time soon,” said a security official familiar with the on-ground situation.
“The reason is obvious, there are more pressing issues that the two countries are trying to overcome at this stage,” said the official, who requested not to be identified.
A Pakistani diplomat, posted in Washington, also confirmed that the US was showing little interest in resuming the strategic dialogue at this stage. “It is not possible in the present situation,” the diplomat added.
The US Embassy in Islamabad has no updates either on the status of the strategic dialogue.
The dialogue, which covers a wide-range of issues from Pakistan’s energy needs to health and education sector woes, was initiated by the Obama administration as part of its effort to ally fears that the US might repeat the mistake of the 1980s when it left Islamabad ‘high and dry’ after driving out Soviet troops from Afghanistan.
It was also meant to remove the widely held perception that relations between the two countries were confined only to security matters.
The last round of the strategic dialogue was held in October 2010 in Washington. The dialogue was supposed to take place in March this year, but was delayed because of the controversy over the killing of two Pakistanis by a CIA contractor in January.
The two sides, however, agreed to resume the process in May after the contractor, Raymond Davis, was freed in a deal with the heirs of the victims.
But the talks could not go ahead as planned due to the Bin Laden raid and have now been delayed indefinitely.
The latest development is the clearest indication as yet that the relations between Pakistan and the US have hit a new low.
Official sources say the trust-deficit between the two countries is widening as the US prepares for the end game in Afghanistan.
On Wednesday, Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar confirmed that Pakistan was pushing the US to abandon the Shamsi airbase, which the Central Intelligence Agency has reportedly been using for years to undertake its drone attacks inside the country’s tribal belt.
On its part, the US is learnt to have threatened to cut of military aid to Pakistan and even withheld the latest tranche of a $500 million payment which is part of the Coalition Support Fund (CSF).
Officials insist that the US is exerting pressure after Pakistan’s security establishment launched a crackdown against the CIA network in the country as part of the cleansing process to reduce the CIA footprint but at the same time appears reluctant to go after the Haqqani network allegedly based in North Waziristan.

CAIRO, Egypt – Saboteurs bombed an Egyptian natural gas pipeline on the Sinai Peninsula Monday, with the blast sending flames shooting into the sky, a security official told AFP.

Officials said a car was parked near the pipeline in the Bir al Abd area, 50 miles (80km) from the north Sinai town of El Arish, shortly before the explosion. They said the bomb was activated remotely.

Emergency services were deployed to the area to try to bring the fire under control, an official said.

According to witnesses, the flames reached as high as 32 feet (10 meters) in the air.

There were no immediate reports of casualties in the attack, which was the third since February, when an uprising toppled former president Hosni Mubarak and saw power handed over to a military council.

The pipeline carries gas from Egypt to Israel and Jordan, with the explosion occurring at a pumping station.

The natural gas company that runs the pipeline closed it down after the explosion, a source told Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Previous explosions on Feb. 5 and April 27 this year have disrupted the gas supply. There was also a failed attack on the pipeline in March.

Egypt supplies about 40 percent of Israel's natural gas which is used to produce electricity. In December, four Israeli firms signed 20-year contracts worth up to $10 billion to import Egyptian gas.

Egyptian English-language news website Ahram Online reported last week that the government was seeking the help of tribes in the north of the peninsula to improve the security of the pipeline.

Abdel Wahab Mabruk, Governor of North Sinai, said he was working with the Ministry of Petroleum to hire Bedouins to secure the line and the pumping stations connected to it.

Jordan, which buys 95 percent of its energy needs, imports about 240 million cubic feet (6.8 million cubic metres) of Egyptian gas a day, or 80 percent of its electricity requirements, AFP reported.

WASHINGTON - The US military is rapidly expanding its Central Asian supply routes to the war in Afghanistan, fearing that Pakistan could cut off the main means of providing American and NATO forces with fuel, food and equipment, The Washington Post reported.
Experts said US officials prompt news media reports such as this one every time tensions erupt in the US-Pakistan relations.
On Sunday, the Post recalled that Pakistan’s temporary closure of a major crossing into Afghanistan in September, resulting in a logjam of hundreds of supply trucks and fuel tankers, dozens of which were destroyed in attacks by insurgents.
“While reducing the shipment of cargo through Pakistan would address a strategic weakness that US military officials have long considered an Achilles’ heel, shifting supply lines elsewhere would substantially increase the cost of the war and make the United States more dependent on authoritarian countries in Central Asia,” the newspaper said. A senior US defence official said the military wants to keep using Pakistan, which offers the most direct and the cheapest routes to Afghanistan. But the Pentagon also wants the ability to bypass the country if necessary.
With landlocked Afghanistan lacking seaports, and hostile Iran blocking access from the west, it said Pentagon logisticians have limited alternatives. “It’s either Central Asia or Pakistan — those are the two choices. We’d like to have both,” the defence official said, “We’d like to have a balance between them, and not be dependent on either one, but always have the possibility of switching.” US military officials said they have emergency backup plans in case the Pakistan routes became unavailable. “We will be on time, all the time,” said Vice Admiral Mark Harnitchek, deputy commander of the US Transportation Command, which oversees the movement of supplies and equipment.
In such an event, however, the military would have to deliver the bulk of its cargo by air, a method that might not be sustainable; it costs up to 10 times as much as shipping via Pakistan, the Post said. “We’d have to be a little bit more mindful of what we put in the pipe,” Harnitchek said.
Citing unnamed Pentagon officials, the Post said that in 2009, the United States moved 90 per cent of its military surface cargo through the Karachi port and then through mountain passes into Afghanistan.

Iran has threatened to halt crude oil supplies to India if it is not paid, local English language daily Tehran Times reported on Sunday. Iran threatened to stop its crude exports to India from August if New Delhi fails to pay 9 billion dollars for oil imports from Iran, which is now seven months in arrears, said the report. According to the local reports, India has been supplied some 400,000 barrels per day of crude oil on credit by Iran since late December last year. Under the USZ pressure in December last year, the Reserve Bank of India scrapped a long-standing system to pay for import from Iran using a clearing house system run by regional central banks and since then the Indian government has been trying to find an alternative mechanism to the scrapped system.

India and Iran's other crude customers are under the USZ pressure to reduce oil transactions with Iran and under the pressures the current payment mechanisms for clearing the debts have faced serious problems. Iran is the second largest crude supplier to India by meeting the 12 percent of its annual oil needs after Saudi Arabia.

The Lahore High Court on Thursday sought a reply from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on a point of law raised by the counsel for Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed: if the government can defend a retired military officer before a US court, then why can’t it do the same for another Pakistani citizen?

Saeed and several other JD members and Inter Services Intelligence officers including the current and previous director general have been accused in an American court of providing material support to the perpetrators of the November 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai.
Advocate AK Dogar argued on Thursday that the government was paying to defend former ISI chief Nadeem Taj even though he was now a private individual post retirement. He said that his client Saeed, as an ordinary citizen, should be treated the same as a retired government officer and be defended in the petition in the US court.
Justice Umar Ata Bandial then directed Deputy Attorney General Naseem Kashmiri, who was present in the court, to file a reply on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this regard by September 20.
At the last hearing, the ministry had told the court that it was defending current ISI chief LT Gen Shuja Pasha before the US court because he was the head of a government institution, while the JD and its chief were not a part of the government. Therefore the government could not provide legal assistance to him or his organisation.
Background
The petition against Saeed, in which he is described as the head of the Lashkar-i-Taiba, and the ISI was filed by the son of two Jewish Americans killed in the Mumbai attack and others. The plaintiffs have filed nine claims against the accused and sought $75,000 in damages on each claim.
Saeed later moved a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking official help to defend himself in the case. He submitted that he had no ties to Lashkar-i-Taiba, which is believed to have organised the Mumbai attack, and was head of a charity, Jamatud Dawa.
He said the government had detained him in 2009 and a full bench of LHC had ordered his release, noting that there was no evidence that he had links with Al Qaeda or any terrorist organisation.
The petitioner said that the government should defend him in the same manner as it was protecting the ISI chief and other officials. Saeed said that as a Pakistani citizen, he enjoyed same rights as any other Pakistani.
He said that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had said in the National Assembly that ISI officials could not be subjected to a trial in an American court and the government would try to get the case dismissed. The petitioner said that under Article 25 of the Constitution, all citizens were equal before the law and entitled to equal protection of the law.

The anti-nuclear watchdog group Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety, however, said the fire appeared to be about 3 1/2 miles from a dumpsite where as many as 30,000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste were stored in fabric tents above ground. The group said the drums were awaiting transport to a low-level radiation dump site in southern New Mexico. Lab spokesman Steve Sandoval declined to confirm that there were any such drums currently on the property.

Lab officials at first declined to confirm that such drums were on the property, but in a statement early Tuesday, lab spokeswoman Lisa Rosendorf said such drums are stored in a section of the complex known as Area G. She said the drums contain cleanup from Cold War-era waste that the lab sends away in weekly shipments to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.She said the drums were on a paved area with few trees nearby and would be safe even if a fire reached the storage area. Officials have said it is miles from the flames.

The Los Alamos Study Group alleges that the waste is not all from the Cold War, because the facility is cranking out more nuclear weapons than ever. The lab has called in a special team to test plutonium and uranium levels in the air as a “precaution”. One area within the Los Alamos complex already suffered a temporary fire, which was doused. As Reuters reports:

A small offshoot of the blaze jumped State Highway 4 onto the lab grounds on Monday, burning about an acre (0.4 hectare) of property before it was extinguished about two hours later.

With the meaning of the military initiative being blurred by the press and the president, Madsen says a gross flux of misinformation is creating a propaganda war to get American support for the Libyan mission, and a recent poll shows that it isn’t working.

“The media is silent,” says Madsen. “Worse,” he adds, “they are putting out disinformation rather than reporting facts as they see them on the ground.”

Madsen says that Gaddafi is only gaining support in Tripoli, and as rebels rejoin his forces, the media in America does not bother telling people. “Many former rebels say, ‘look, we weren’t happy with Gaddafi,’” says Madsen, but as NATO is slaughtering civilians, they are becoming more in favor of the colonel, despite his reputation, because he is a Libyan national. And, most importantly, not a foreign invader.
No matter how the media is painting it, Madsen says, this is far from being just “a Libyan situation.”

“This is another constitutional show-down between the White House and Congress,” he says.

This comes as 70 lawmakers on Capitol Hill voted to withdraw support for Obama’s war as the president continues to wage a battle that the Legislative Branch isn’t behind.

The map of Caucasus given below illustrates an area of territory known as the Nagorno-Karabakh (a Russian-Turkish term meaning “mountainous black garden”), an enclave precariously situated along the border with bitter enemies Armenia and Azerbaijan. The issue is that both sides claim this enclave. Before the break-up of the Soviet Union it was within the borders of Azerbaijan, but after the collapse of the USSR the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh (who make up the majority of the population) won a vote to break away from the Azeri side. Entwined in this also is Iran, which have an interest in this area (particularly in preserving the status-quo), and Georgia which sits directly to its north-west. Complicating matters, this area sits right next to the oil and gas rich Caspian Sea, which both Russia and Turkey would very much like a monopoly over. There are lucrative opportunities to build connecting pipelines, worth potentially trillions of dollars in revenue to the winning side.

When looking at the above map of this area and the complex geopolitical web that surrounds it, we immediately see the dangerous potential of miscalculation. Historically, Armenia has had Russia as its big brother to lend it moral (and full-blown military) support in times of crisis. As for Azerbaijan, they have Turkey, and by extension, NATO. An Armenian MP recently warned that any failure by both sides to reach a final agreement on the territorial issue of Nagorno-Karabakh could result in a Third World War. And his reasoning is logical. Any explosion of violence in this part of the world would draw in other powers such as Iran, Syria, France and Greece, all of whom are tied up in their respective security pacts with Turkey and Russia. Yesterday, the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia met in Kazan, Russia to reach an agreement and avert such a catastrophic scenario. The talks failed, and both sides walked out. With tensions high enough on the Turkish-Syrian border, we can be forgiven for wondering whether Turkey’s decision today to put troops on high alert had something to do with developments further north where Armenia and Azerbaijan stand poised on the brink of conflict.

While the world’s attention is focused on events in Libya, Syria and Greece we may be witnessing the birth of a much more high stakes situation in this little enclave tucked away by the Caspian Sea. The First World War began over irreconcilable differences in a very similar set of circumstances. Two tiny ethnic powder-kegs backed by large world powers in a strategic part of the world. When the war began, existing security pacts came into force and the war spread like wildfire. The Second World War also began over the territorial disputes, but this time between larger powers (Nazi Germany and the British Empire), though the outbreak of actual fighting was due again to the same factor – intricate alliance systems in a volatile part of the world. May this never be the case, but a conflagration involving Turkey and Russia over this disputed territory could evolve into a Third World War, quickly spreading across the region and the broader world, thanks to existing security pacts. But that’s the worst-case scenario. For now, both sides should take a moment of pause and remember just how the last two world wars started and ended.
